BASIC FUNCTIONS:
- Diagnose, repair and maintain road construction and related equipment to ensure safe operation of all Carlton County equipment through proper maintenance, service, and repair.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul
- Diagnose issues and make repairs on mobile equipment such as sweepers, bulldozers, trucks, power mowers, stripers and graders and on automobiles used by Carlton County departments.
- Repair and maintain non-mobile equipment such as plow blades, chain saws, pumps, conveyors and other equipment used by the county.
- Overhaul diesel and gasoline engines; replace parts as necessary.
- Repair differentials and rear end assemblies, reading manuals to obtain specifications, diagnosing issues and replacing bearings, gears, shafts or other worn parts.
- Troubleshoot transmissions, diagnosing issues by pressure checking, studying specifications and replacing parts.
- Repair electrical systems, rebuilding or replacing alternators, generators and starters, analyzing issues with an amp-volt regulator and replacing parts as necessary.
- Repair and replace brakes, steering and suspension systems; rebuild calipers and replace broken springs and other parts.
- Diagnose, adjust and repair hydraulic systems; repack hydraulic cylinders and rebuild hydraulic pumps; pressure-check hydraulic systems.
- Fabricate parts necessary for the repair of equipment by welding or using drill presses, grinders, power saws; fabricate and mount plow hitches and other special equipment.
- Determine what parts and materials to order from vendors and suppliers.
- Maintain current inventory of parts.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
- High school graduation or equivalent, successful completion of a two (2) year heavy truck and/or heavy equipment repair vocational program.
- Minimum of six (6) years (1,500 hours per year minimum) of increasingly responsible experience performing all types and levels of repairs on at least some of the following equipment classes: heavy trucks, small engines/self-powered equipment, automotive/light duty vehicles, or heavy equipment.
- Or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
Training Required:
- Meets qualifications of Mechanic I.
Certificates/Licenses/Tools Required:
- Candidate must be D.O.T. certified as a truck inspector, as needed.
- MPCA Certificate for fuel storage tanks, as needed.
- Commercial Class A State of Minnesota driver's license with no restrictions for air brakes and no suspensions for driving related offences or revocations within a two (2) year period prior to date of appointment.
- Must be able to obtain a Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of employment.
- Certificate to perform maintenance and repairs on Sheriff units, as needed.
- Required to provide tools non-specialty tools not provided by the County to perform job duties. See Article 11, Section 1 of 49ers Union Contract for details.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Required at Entry:
- Knowledge of mechanical repairs.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.

- Ability to perform work which requires physical agility.
- Ability to diagnose equipment issues.
- Ability to read blueprint schematics, wiring and other repair diagrams.
- Ability to safely operate equipment and tools required for repair such as flow meters, wheel balancing equipment, socket sets, arc and gas welders, and plasma.
- Ability to operate equipment to be repaired.
- Ability to fabricate parts for repairs.
- Ability to continue education about new equipment repair techniques and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to perform arc and gas welding and mig welding.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
