Part-Time Transit Driver / Passenger Assistant

General Description

An employee in this class operates a vehicle to transport passengers to their destinations. Work involves following assigned routes and making adjustments to ensure efficient use of time and vehicles. Work requires providing assistance for passengers in and out of vehicles and buildings, assisting passengers with mobility devices, and possibly collecting fees for services. Employees keep records of passengers and trips. Work subjects the employee to inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases and mists. Work is performed under regular supervision by the Transit Services Operations Supervisor and is evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of the vehicles, for adherence to established standards, and by client feedback.

Essential Duties and Tasks

• Operates varied size vehicles, with and without wheelchair lifts, to transport passengers to and from various destinations.
• Ensures the safe pick up and return of passengers.
• Drives assigned routes or special trips in or out of the County.
• Assists passengers (if needed) in and out of the van, up and down from seats and on stairs; folds and stores walkers, operates lifts on vehicles and secures mobility devices.
• Maintains the van in good working order by regularly checking operating parts and systems such as checking the fluid levels, tire pressure, belts and taking the van to the garage when scheduled for service.
• Maintains first aid supplies and fire suppression equipment on vehicles.
• Maintains passenger and trip records, records mileage, number of passengers and other required information.
• Keeps the van clean at all times during the workday.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of geographical layout, streets and road system of the county and surrounding areas.
• Working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of assigned vehicle.
• Skilled in the operation of a passenger vehicle.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of citizens from birth to older adults, including ones with physical, mental and emotional disabilities.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
• Ability to perform minor checks and maintenance on the van.
• Ability to establish and maintain records and reports.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or equivalent. Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license with passenger endorsement or willingness to obtain within required timeframes. Three (3) years clean driving record. CPR and First Aid certifications or willingness to obtain within required timeframes. Training and experience in the operation of a public passenger vehicle preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift objects. Must possess the visual acuity to operate a motor vehicle, to keep records and reports and to read maps and instructions.
