Job Description: Pet Department Manager
Job Type: Full Time with benefits, must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
Job Summary: The pet department manager is the primary caretaker for supervising and protecting the overall health and well-being of all CountryMax live animals. The Pet department manager is also an educator and source of knowledge for customers. The pet department manager ensures that all CountryMax live animals receive the upmost care and that customers are helped in a timely manner. The pet department manager delegates a small team of pet store team members and works to create and build a team environment.
CountryMax Overview: Beginning in 1984 as a small farm supply and feed store owned by the Payne family, CountryMax has grown into one of western New York State’s biggest success stories. CountryMax now operates 18 locations spanning from Buffalo to just north of Binghamton, and employs over 300 team members, a number that continues to grow each year. Over time the product offering as well as store size has increased dramatically- in addition to farm and feed supplies, CountryMax is now a one-stop shop for all lawn and garden products, pet supplies, small pets, clothing and backyard wild bird feeding. CountryMax customers have come to rely on a level of service, pricing, and small-town feel in a way that larger stores cannot replicate- yet they also enjoy the benefits of CountryMax’s extensive purchasing power and flexibility that typically tips the scales between the “big-boxes” and independents.
Position Outline: The pet department manager is a key position in the store. The pet department manager will receive hands on education in the store. Assisting customers and supervising the overall well-being of all CountryMax live animals will be the primary role. Delegating and managing the pet department team is also a primary function of the pet department manager. Secondary tasks include merchandising and inventory control.
· Provide top-notch CountryMax helpful service, including carrying out any and all products for customers and patrons- provide education and information to customers regarding the CountryMax live animals
· After proper training, the pet department team member may need to operate Point of Sale terminals and handle financial transactions
· Oversee the overall well-being of all CountryMax live animals through regular and routine cleaning, consistent live animal health checks, and tank/ enclosure maintenance
· Supervise and delegate the pet department team to keep the pet department running at peak performance and efficiency
· As a key holder the pet manager will be tasked with the opening and closing of the store
· Each month the pet department manager will be given set monthly sales goals to achieve
· Overseeing pet department livestock orders
· Reviewing and maintaining customer special orders
Position Requirements:
The pet department team member will primarily work in the pet department and at times the front end
· Previous experience in a retail environment is preferred but not required
· Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. if necessary
· Previous experience working with and caring for live animals is preferred but not required
· Must be able to stand on your feet for up to 12 hours or for the duration of the store’s operating hours
· Helpful service and keen social skills are a must
· Ability to work as a team in a retail atmosphere
