General Position Description
The Assistant Director supports the Program Director in overseeing daily operations of the center, ensuring a safe, nurturing, and high-quality environment for children, families, and staff. This role combines administrative responsibilities with hands-on classroom support, family engagement, and staff supervision. The Assistant Director helps manage enrollments, maintain compliance with licensing standards, coordinate center events, and foster positive relationships with families and team members. In the Director’s absence, the Assistant Director assumes full responsibility for center leadership and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervising the center in the Program Director’s absence.
- Managing new child enrollments from the inquiry stage through the entire enrollment process.
- Reaching out to inquiring parents.
- Touring and answering questions for interested parents.
- Collecting enrollment paperwork from new families.
- Entering child/family information into relevant systems.
- Communicating with Program Director and teaching staff about new families starting.
- Supporting teaching staff in the classroom by:
- Stepping in to help with children displaying challenging behaviors
- Providing bathroom breaks
- Covering for absent staff
- Coaching staff on best practices in classroom management
- Carryout miscellaneous office and administrative duties—data entry and upkeep, filing, answering calls, managing office supply inventories, etc.
- Assisting the Program Director with planning and coordinating center events.
- Collect and record tuition payments according to established company procedures.
- Attend field trips and transport children on 14-passenger school bus in the absence of regular bus drivers.
- Actively seeking to continuously update skills by attending outside workshops, participating in trainings, and by constantly seeking new ideas and materials for use in the classroom with the children or to share with other staff members.
- Staying current on required annual trainings and other required certifications.
- Maintaining professional attitudes, behavior, and dress at all times while on duty. This includes using the proper channels to air problems and complaints.
- Maintaining strict confidentiality regarding children and their families.
- Generally promoting a good rapport among staff members.
- Attending all staff meetings and other mandated company events.
- Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with children and families.
- Understanding and following all federal, state, and local childcare regulations, and company policies.
- Providing consistency to children and families by maintaining good attendance habits.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Deep understanding of child development and responsive early childhood education practices.
- Relate well to children, have a warm and friendly personality, and be able to work in harmony with other staff members.
- Have the ability to supervise multiple staff members.
- Be able to build and maintain positive, professional relationships and rapport with families, demonstrating strong communication and customer service skills.
- Willing to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with the center’s philosophy.
Education & Experience
- C.D.A., two-year, or four-year degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field.
- Experience working in a licensed child care center as a lead teacher or performing managerial duties.
- Pediatric first aid and CPR certification.
- Pass criminal background check.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to engage in active care, including frequently lifting children, kneeling, bending, and participating in floor-based play.
- Comfortable working in an environment with exposure to common childhood illnesses.
