Salary Range: $40-$45 per hour
Job Objective:
To provide highly qualified Training Specialist(s) with Surgical Technician (ST) certification or Bioskills Lab Technician certification in support of Healthcare Simulation (mannequin and/or tissue-based) for the Defense Health Agency at Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD).
Personnel will support training for deploying operational forces and annual clinical readiness requirements within the Bioskills & Simulation Training Center (BSTC). The role emphasizes hands-on surgical and cadaver-based training support, simulation operations, and technical instruction for medical, surgical, and tactical scenarios, along with associated administrative responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications (Required Focus):
- Must possess and maintain a current Surgical Technician (ST) certification OR Bioskills Lab Technician certification (primary requirement)
- Demonstrated experience supporting surgical procedures, tissue-based training, or cadaver labs
- Ability and willingness to work directly with cadavers, including preparation, handling, and support during simulation training, in compliance with all ethical, safety, and regulatory standards
- Familiarity with sterile techniques, surgical instrumentation, and operating room procedures
- Experience supporting medical simulation, surgical training environments, or clinical education programs
- Basic audio/visual troubleshooting skills (e.g., identifying signal loss, distortion, and equipment issues relevant to simulation environments)
- Prior military or civilian clinical training (e.g., Corpsman, EMT, ST, Nurse) strongly preferred
General Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of surgical workflows, anatomy, and medical terminology, particularly across specialties such as Orthopedics, Trauma, General Surgery, OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, and Neurosurgery
- Experience supporting simulation-based training, including mannequin-based and/or tissue-based platforms
- Ability to prepare, stage, and break down surgical and bioskills training events, including equipment and specimen management
- Skilled in adult learning principles and instructional support, particularly in hands-on clinical or procedural training environments
- Ability to instruct, brief, or support large groups in a clinical training setting
- Working knowledge of simulation technologies, including hardware, software, and 3D/virtual systems
- Understanding of Military Treatment Facility (MTF) operations and Joint Commission safety standards
- Strong customer support and coordination skills to assist instructors, clinicians, and trainees during events
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and general data tracking for training support and reporting
- Familiarity with both Windows and Macintosh systems preferred
- Ability to maintain training records, databases, and performance metrics
Physical & Operational Requirements:
- Ability to perform fine motor skills and precise hand movements consistent with surgical technician duties
- Capable of lifting, moving, and handling equipment and training materials up to 150lbs
- Ability to assist in cadaver movement and positioning, including transfers between gurneys and tables
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and work in lab/clinical environments for extended periods
