POSITION SUMMARY
The Collection Specialist plays a critical frontline role in Cottonwood’s Urinalysis Collections Department by directly engaging with clients to observe and collect specimens in a respectful, professional, and compliant manner. This position ensures accuracy in specimen handling, documentation, and reporting, supporting treatment teams with timely and reliable results. As a key contributor to client accountability, the Collection Specialist upholds our standards of care and legal compliance in every collection interaction.

OBJECTIVES
- Conducts urinalysis specimen collections in accordance with legal and procedural requirements.
- Completes new client intakes for urinalysis-only services.
- Performs waived testing as directed.
- Accurately documents and enters billable services.
- Handles client payments and issues receipts when applicable.
- Prepares specimens for shipment and coordinates daily deliveries.
- Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of the collection area.
- Supports departmental compliance through accurate chain-of-custody practices.
- Communicates professionally with clients, colleagues, and supervisors.
- Completes daily deposit reconciliation for collected payments and submits supporting documentation to the appropriate department.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or a laboratory/collections setting preferred.
- Familiarity with urinalysis procedures, waived testing, and chain-of-custody protocol is a plus.
- Ability to accurately handle documentation, billing entries, and client interactions.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and quality improvement.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods throughout the workday.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds (e.g. testing kits, supplies).
- Ability to bend, reach, and perform repeated movements required for specimen collection.
- Sufficient vision, hearing, and speech to engage in effective, respectful communication.
- Must be comfortable working in a client-facing, fast-paced environment.
