What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreation Therapy Intern (Spring) position at Cosumnes Community Services District?

The Cosumnes Community Services District (District) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the residents, businesses, visitors, and employees within our diverse community. We are seeking candidates who are looking to grow, develop, and have a passion for Recreation. The internships at the District are part-time, temporary positions.

Our Internships provide active college students with opportunities to grow, explore career paths, and connect with others in their field of study. In addition, interns have the opportunity to make positive contributions and serve the community in a meaningful way.

Recreation Therapy Internship:
This program is designed for students in their final semester. Students must be registered at the University for the Internship in the same semester that they begin the internship in an accredited Recreation Therapy program. The internship will be a minimum of 560 hours (40 hours a week, 14 weeks). This internship will meet the requirements for the NCTRC Job Task Analysis.

Applicants for this internship must attach a Resume, a Cover Letter, and at least one letter of Recommendation to their application.

Objectives of Internship include:
  1. To apply academic knowledge of therapeutic recreation in a practice setting
  2. To develop clinical practice skills and abilities under the guidance of a professionally certified Recreation Therapist
  3. To assess and expand the student’s competencies in therapeutic recreation
  4. To acquire an in-depth understanding of how therapeutic recreation in health and human service delivery systems
  5. To develop and practice ethical and professional behaviors in a work setting
  6. To develop an understanding of critical issues related to the practice of therapeutic recreation 
Please note: The intern is required to complete a project approved by the agency supervisor.

Internship Periods:
The internship typically runs from January through June, depending on internship requirements.

Salary Information
The salary range for the Intern classification is between $16.50 - $18.00 per hour. The District typically appoints new employees at step 1 of the salary range. Consideration for an appointment higher than step 1 will be based on experience, education, or the need for unique skills or knowledge, and shall be no more than the mid-point of the salary range.The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required. 
 
  • Assists in planning, implementing and leading participants in a variety of recreation programs specific to a program area;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are a necessity including knowledge of basic office equipment and use of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication working relationships with other employees, participants, and the public;
  • Initiative and willingness to learn with a strong desire for continued learning, and an interest in recreation and activity planning is required.
Typical Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office environment and/or outside in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

 Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Must be enrolled in college as a student and working towards a bachelor's or graduate degree in Parks & Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field;
  • Applicants must be over the age of 18.

Special Requirement:
  • Students must be registered at the University for the Internship in the same semester they begin the internship in an accredited Recreation Therapy program.
THE PROCESS:

Application Review: Applications will be reviewed after the closing date for possession of minimum qualifications and evaluated according to the essential functions of the job and other needs of the position. After the review of all applications has been completed, all applicants will be notified of the status of their application.
 
Interview- The most qualified candidates from the review will be invited to participate in an interview.  Interviews will be tentatively scheduled in person only on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.  Should you need accommodations, please contact Human Resources.    
 
Conditional Offer Procedures - Candidates selected from the process may receive a conditional offer of employment contingent upon the successful completion of the following:

  • Background Check:  A State of California, Department of Justice criminal background check.
  • Medical Clearance: A clear tuberculosis and drug screening is required.
  • Driving Record:  A State of California DMV driving record printout may be required.
Please Note: Part-time employment with the District is on an "at-will" basis meaning the District or the employee may terminate employment at any time with or without cause.

Documentation verifying the candidate's legal right to work in the United States will be required and shall be presented upon hire.
