Farm Utility Worker I Job Description The Farm Utility Worker supports daily farm operations including planting, growing, maintenance, and packing of plant material. All workers must follow safety, quality, and productivity standards while working as part of a team in a positive and professional manner. Primary Responsibilities include: • Plant young plant material (plugs or liners) on potting lines accurately and efficiently. • Prune and trim plants as instructed by supervisors. • Apply care tags, bar codes, and lot tags as needed. • Build, repair, and store shipping racks and trays. • Move, load, or unload plant material as directed. • Consolidate, space, spread, or dump plant material according to work orders. • Assist with general maintenance of the farm, including weeding, trimming, mowing, sweeping, and cleaning around production and non-production areas. • Identify and report poor-quality plant material or damaged items. • Assist with soil mixing, potting machines, conveyors, or other production line equipment as directed. • Perform general housekeeping duties such as picking up trash and keeping work areas clean. • Follow all instructions provided by the supervisor for daily work assignments. Additional Responsibilities include: • Assist with field and greenhouse work such as covering or uncovering plants, spreading ground cover, and cleaning drainage areas. • Support loading and offloading trucks and rearranging plant racks. • Assist with basic general maintenance of crops, including irrigating, weeding, fertilizing, and supporting pesticide or fungicide applications as directed by supervisors. • Perform basic upkeep of work areas including light repairs, mowing, trimming, and maintaining walkways or drainage areas. • Follow all work orders and report completion to the supervisor. Specific health and safety requirements include but are not limited to: • Attend safety meetings as scheduled. • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). • Follow all company, OSHA, and Worker Protection Standard (WPS) safety rules. • Report hazards, injuries, or near-miss incidents immediately to the supervisor. • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment. Physical requirements of the job include: • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, humidity). • Stand and walk for long periods. • Frequently stoop, bend, lift, and reach. • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs and move plant material up to shoulder height. • Drag hoses and work from heights when necessary. • Perform repetitive tasks requiring manual dexterity. Workers will report to work at the designated time and place as directed by the supervisor each day. The standard workweek is 5 days a week. The average workday is 7 - 8 hours per day. When working only a half day, the workday is approximately 3.5 – 4 hours per day. In peak periods of seasonal crop demands, employees may be offered, but not required, to work up to 12 or more hours per day and/or on the Sabbath or Federal holidays, depending upon the conditions in the fields, weather, orders, and maturity of the crop. Employees may volunteer to work additional hours when work is available. Workers should expect occasional periods of little or no work because of weather, crop or other conditions beyond the employer’s control. These periods can occur at any time throughout the season.
