The Pre-Operative Registered Nurse (Pre-Op RN) is responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to patients before surgical and procedural interventions. This role involves patient assessment, education, preparation for surgery, coordination with the healthcare team, and ensuring patients are physically and emotionally prepared for their procedures. The Pre-Op RN plays a vital role in promoting patient safety, maintaining regulatory compliance, and delivering exceptional patient-centered care.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive pre-operative nursing assessments, including review of medical history, allergies, medications, laboratory results, and diagnostic tests.
- Verify physician orders, informed consent forms, and surgical site documentation.
- Prepare patients for surgery by initiating IV access, administering prescribed medications, and completing required pre-operative treatments.
- Educate patients and family members regarding surgical procedures, pre- and post-operative expectations, and discharge planning.
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members to coordinate patient care.
- Identify and communicate any abnormalities, concerns, or changes in patient condition to the appropriate provider.
- Ensure compliance with patient safety standards, infection prevention protocols, and regulatory requirements.
- Accurately document assessments, interventions, patient education, and care provided in the electronic medical record.
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
- Assist with patient flow and scheduling to support efficient surgical operations.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities.
- Provide emotional support and reassurance to patients and families throughout the pre-operative
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Texas (or compact state eligibility).
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong assessment, critical thinking, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Minimum one (1) year of perioperative, pre-op, PACU, ICU, Emergency Department, or medical-surgical nursing experience.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR).
