This is a temporary, part-time position expected through May, 2026

The Learning Specialist for Science is responsible for providing tutoring assistance to students at the main Spencer Hill campus, online, and other CCC locations as necessary. Support the overall operations of the Learning Center and assist in the training and supervision of student employees. The position will be 25 hours per week.

Almost all work will be done in the Learning Center in the main campus library building. Occasional meetings at different CCC main campus buildings and satellite CCC locations may be required. Prolonged time sitting/standing working with computers and monitors, ability to walk/move across campus including walking up and down stairs, ability to lift up to 20 pounds (occasionally may be more), repeated motions may include keyboard typing. Typical student-facing office and indoor building environments, occasional outdoor activity may be required. Essential Functions

Tutoring and Academic Support (75%) -

  • Provide tutoring services as a learning specialist for science at the main Spencer Hill campus or other CCC locations if necessary, helping students who come in person (on a drop-in and/or appointment basis) or who have live remote appointments.
  • Tutor students in a variety of sciences, necessarily including several different kinds of chemistry and biology (including human anatomy & physiology), but also other natural or applied sciences if possible
  • Serve as a liaison with instructional staff in multiple subject disciplines. Work with faculty to ensure tutoring content and skills support is appropriately aligned with course curriculum, scope, and sequence, and to provide students with needed tutorial services
  • Develop and conduct group review sessions and live presentations for students (e.g. study techniques, subject-specific content review sessions, brief class presentations about our Learning Center services, etc.) within or outside of classes
  • Develop supplemental academic resources that students and faculty can access and use independently, such as handouts (print and digital) and video tutorials on relevant academic topics
  • Provide accurate and suitable documentation of each tutoring session for the benefit of the tutees, the Learning Center staff, and others as appropriate
  • Maintain familiarity and application of the best pedagogical practices for learning center services

Operations (20%) -

  • Forge and maintain connections and partnerships with instructional and support staff across the College in all disciplines and service areas in order to market and advocate for the Learning Center’s services
  • Assist in student outreach, documentation, and tracking in response to faculty referrals of students to the Learning Center
  • Work with Library building staff to provide collaborative and cohesive academic support services, materials, and equipment
  • Help promote the Learning Center, Library, and their various services to current and prospective students through class visits, tours, informational tables, etc.
  • Help recruit and interview potential peer tutors and make hiring recommendations to the Assistant Director
  • Refer students to other services and resources on campus
  • Provide adequate staffing and services at multiple locations and online
  • May supervise the Learning Center or Library Building in the absence of the Director or Assistant Director
  • May assist with the operation of the Elmira Learning Center at the Elmira Academic and Workforce Development Center
  • Help maintain the Learning Center’s web page with current and relevant content
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned

Training and Supervision (5%) -

  • Assist with planning and conducting training and supervision of peer tutors (especially for science) and other student employees in the Learning Center
  • Assist with the informal and formal observations of peer tutoring sessions, following through with supportive dialogue with the peer tutor after the session

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral/written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other software
  • Proficiency in all college-level General Biology and General Chemistry concepts and related skills
  • Ability to accept changes to job requirements, policies, workload, etc., as well as learn new methods, procedures, or techniques resulting from change with the ability to clearly approach problems and find solutions

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in a discipline related to the subject for which tutoring services will be provided
  • Work experience in teaching or tutoring at the middle school, high school, or college level

Preferred Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred, with additional relevant experience
Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including, but not limited to relevant experience, education, market demands, and training.
