About This Role

General Purpose

The Preschool Christian Teacher shall prayerfully support the spiritual, academic, social, emotional, and physical development of each child. The teacher will provide a safe, nurturing, Christ-centered learning environment that helps children develop the attitudes, skills, knowledge, and character needed to become mature, responsible Christians who glorify God.


Christian Commitment and Personal Qualifications

The teacher shall:

  1. Have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and demonstrate a growing relationship with Him.
  2. Believe that the Bible is God’s Word and the standard for faith and daily living.
  3. Fully support the school’s Statement of Faith and Christian philosophy of education.
  4. Demonstrate and model Christian character through attitude, speech, conduct, appearance, and relationships with others.
  5. Demonstrate excellence, faith, and a willingness to serve beyond minimum expectations, as reflected in Daniel 6:3, Matthew 14:29, and Matthew 5:41.
  6. Demonstrate spiritual maturity, sound judgment, leadership, enthusiasm, flexibility, kindness, perseverance, punctuality, and emotional stability.
  7. Recognize parents as having the primary responsibility for their children’s education and work cooperatively with families.
  8. Maintain confidentiality and use student, family, and organizational information appropriately.
  9. Maintain a teachable attitude and make an effort to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of the school community.

What You'll Do

Essential Responsibilities

The teacher shall:

  1. Honor Christ through classroom instruction, relationships, and all school-related activities.
  2. Integrate biblical principles and the Christian philosophy of education throughout the curriculum and daily routines.
  3. Encourage students to understand their worth in Christ and grow in their knowledge of God’s love and gift of salvation.
  4. Follow all policies, procedures, licensing requirements, and administrative directives governing the school.
  5. Prepare and teach assigned lessons according to the approved curriculum, scope and sequence, and classroom schedule.
  6. Maintain a safe, clean, attractive, organized, and developmentally appropriate classroom.
  7. Establish and maintain consistent, positive classroom management and discipline practices.
  8. Supervise students carefully during classroom activities, meals, rest periods, outdoor play, field trips, arrival, dismissal, and transitions.
  9. Provide parents and administrators with timely information concerning student progress, accomplishments, behavioral concerns, or developmental needs.
  10. Develop positive relationships with students, families, coworkers, administrators, and members of the community.
  11. Represent the school favorably and professionally both during and outside working hours.
  12. Follow biblical conflict-resolution principles, including Matthew 18:15–20, when addressing concerns.
  13. Attend and participate in required staff meetings, training sessions, parent conferences, and school programs.
  14. Follow all emergency, health, safety, sanitation, incident-reporting, and child-protection procedures.
  15. Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the administration.

Supplemental Responsibilities

The teacher may also be required to:

  • Supervise field trips, extracurricular activities, special programs, and outings.
  • Participate in professional development, observations, evaluations, and improvement activities.
  • Support school-wide programs and attend designated extracurricular activities.
  • Assist with arrival, dismissal, meal service, classroom coverage, and other operational needs.

Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience

The Preschool Lead Teacher shall:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Meet applicable Virginia education and experience requirements through one or more qualifying pathways, which may include:
  • A Child Development Associate credential.
  • An early childhood education certificate.
  • An associate or bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or another child-related field.
  • Qualifying childcare experience combined with continued education or approved training.

Program Director candidates must be at least 21 years old and satisfy the applicable Virginia education and experience requirements. Cornerstone Child Development Center prefers candidates with a bachelor’s degree or higher in a child-related field and at least five years of early-childhood experience.



Required Training and Certifications

Staff members working directly with children must complete and maintain:

  • Virginia Preservice Training for Child Care Staff within the required period.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, as required for classroom coverage.
  • Medication Administration Training when responsible for administering medication.
  • Annual professional development and other training required by Virginia regulations or the school.
  • Any additional health, safety, child-development, emergency-preparedness, or mandated-reporter training required for the position.

Background and Health Requirements

Before beginning employment, the employee must successfully complete all required background checks, including:

  • Virginia State Police criminal history check.
  • Child abuse and neglect registry search.
  • FBI fingerprint-based background check.
  • Any additional state or federal childcare background checks.

The employee must also:

  • Provide tuberculosis screening or documentation as required.
  • Meet applicable health-examination requirements and be physically and emotionally able to perform the position’s essential duties, including supervising children, moving throughout the classroom and playground, responding during emergencies, and lifting or assisting children when necessary.
