What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern Position - Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists (Located in Elmont, NY) position at cornell?
Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists (CRES) is an elite equine veterinary hospital located in western Long Island, NY. As a branch of Cornell University, we have a reputation for providing the highest level of specialty care. Our clientele is diverse, encompassing Olympic athletes, world class racehorses, national level performance horses and everyday companions. CRES is one of the six units of Cornell University Hospital for Animals, the teaching hospital system of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, Ithaca NY. Recognized internationally as a leader in veterinary medical education, animal clinical medicine, biomedical research and public health, Cornell is ranked consistently as one of the best veterinary colleges in the nation. At CRES, veterinarians aspire to assimilate knowledge gained on all fronts – at the track, in the show ring, at the research bench, and in the hospital – to deliver paradigm-shifting veterinary medical care. CRES provides state-of-the-art surgical, diagnostic, and emergency care to enhance equine health. CRES is staffed by Cornell University faculty and staff and offers a full complement of advanced orthopedic and soft tissue surgery, regenerative therapies, critical care, lameness as well as advanced imaging (Standing MRI, nuclear scintigraphy, dynamic and high-definition video endoscopy). The hospital is located across the street from the backstretch of Belmont Park, the world’s premier Thoroughbred horse-racing. CRES regularly collaborates with referring veterinarians to meet the needs of New York State racing and the surrounding sport horse communities. Specialists in internal medicine, dentistry, ophthalmology, and podiatry are routinely consulted as we strive to provide elite level care to our patients. Our practice has an immediate opening for a 9 month to one-year internship position for recently graduated veterinarians wishing to pursue additional training under the guidance of equine specialists. The internship team, comprised of three full time interns, is hospital based where each intern rotates through surgery, medicine/critical care, advanced imaging and anesthesia, and overnight/emergency. Interns participate in a hands-on program. We pride ourselves on an active teaching and learning process for our interns through case rounds, hospital rounds, collaborative interactive seminars with the faculty and residents in Ithaca, and journal club. The internship has broad exposure to specialists with the goal of providing state-of-the-art care to our patients and a diverse learning experience for our interns. Cornell Ruffian has 2 full time surgeons on site, with clinicians rotating through from Cornell Ithaca. In addition to access to the breadth of faculty at Cornell University, local consultations are frequently performed in ophthalmology and podiatry. Interns have the opportunity to participate in a clinical research project with the goal of submitting one manuscript for publication. We welcome both new graduates and veterinarians who have already completed 1-2 internships. Many of our interns pursue specialty residency training. We are proud to have a high match rate with those interested in residency level training as well as success with those interested in advanced research (PhD programs). Program Description The Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists Internship program provides an environment for recent graduates to refine basic and develop advanced clinical skills while providing service to the hospital and its clients. The program is designed to be a versatile foundation for both specialty training and for private practice. The goal of the internship is to teach interns how to organize and conduct the business of patient care, case diagnosis, management, and treatment, in a comprehensive and appropriate manner. The Cornell Ruffian Equine Specialists Internship program consists of advanced clinical and didactic training in equine surgery, lameness, medicine, and imaging. You will work closely with the faculty in the hospital to provide the highest possible quality of patient care and will participate in providing on call and emergency coverage at CRES, as well as working nights, weekends and holidays as required to be shared with the other interns with appropriate faculty support. You will be expected to participate in after-hours emergency services on a rotating basis. When choosing your living arrangements in the Elmont, NY area, please keep in mind that you will need to be within a 15-minute driving distance to the hospital. As an intern you will be directly responsible to the CRES Medical Director and Intern coordinator, Dr. Pigott.
