Job Description
About the Role
Transform complex 3D scan data into precision manufacturing shop drawings for landmark buildings across the Northeast. We need an experienced draftsman who can operate with collaborative independence—driving work autonomously while engaging strategically on technical challenges.
This is not an entry-level position. We're looking for an A-player with expert CAD skills who understands manufacturing constraints and can produce production-ready drawings with minimal hand-holding.
What You'll Do
Primary Responsibility: Point Cloud to Manufacturing Documentation
- Convert 3D scan data (point clouds, STL files, mesh models) into manufacturing-ready AutoCAD shop drawings
- Generate submittal drawings for architect/engineer approval
- Create production drawings with dimensions, sections, elevations, and fabrication details
- Extract accurate dimensional information from complex scan data
- Determine reference planes and measurement strategies for unique building conditions
- Identify conflicts, missing data, or fabrication concerns proactively
- Collaborate with engineering team on project-specific strategies
Critical Context:
Your drawings must be dimensionally accurate, clear about fabrication vs. reference information, and complete enough that production can execute without tracking you down for clarification.
What "Collaborative Independence" Means
We're looking for someone who can drive 80% of their work autonomously while knowing when to engage engineering support.
Expected Learning Curve:
- Technical Skills (Day 1): Expert AutoCAD, point cloud interpretation, 3D modeling = Must be walk-on level
- Industry Knowledge (6-12 Months): Cast stone manufacturing processes, our documentation standards, building-specific strategies = We support this learning
Practical Independence Timeline:
- Month 1: Many questions about our processes, standards, terminology = Expected
- Months 2-3: Learning product specifics, asking industry questions = Normal
- Month 3 : Driving most work independently, consulting on strategy/complex cases
- Month 6-12: Fully integrated, autonomous on standard work, collaborative on novel challenges
Real Project Example
Historic Building Restoration:
Receive point cloud scan of 100-year-old facade & STL files of profiles and organic ornamentation → Create submittal drawings for Architect review & detailed shop drawings for manufacturing, including replacement units matching existing profiles → Analyze variations, determine tolerances, flag coordination issues
Qualifications
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Requirements:
- 5 years creating manufacturing/shop drawings in AutoCAD
- Proven point cloud interpretation and dimensional extraction capability
- 3D modeling proficiency (Rhino strongly preferred, SketchUp or similar acceptable)
- Manufacturing documentation experience (production drawings, not just design)
- Understanding of fabrication constraints and how drawings translate to physical production
Professional Attributes:
- Self-directed work style with strategic collaboration skills
- Clear communication and ability to ask the right questions at the right time
- Ownership mentality and accountability for deliverable quality
- Independent problem-solving and research capabilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with architectural building products manufacturing (precast, GFRC, cast stone, architectural metalwork)
- Background in shop drawing creation for fabrication vs. architectural firms
- Facade work or building envelope systems exposure
- Job-shop manufacturing environment experience with custom products
Work EnvironmentIn-Person (Wyandanch, NY) - Preferred
Advantages:
- Direct access to production floor—see your drawings become physical pieces
- Immediate collaboration with engineering and manufacturing teams
- Faster learning curve on manufacturing processes
- Modern CAD workstations with dual/triple monitor setup provided
Remote Options
Remote USA: Full-time remote available for experienced candidates with proven track record of independent technical work
Remote International: We welcome global talent. Compensation reflects local market conditions while maintaining exceptional rates for exceptional candidates.
All Remote Requirements:
- Strong written/verbal English communication

- Professional CAD-capable workspace and reliable high-speed internet
- Self-sufficient problem-solving with structured communication
Hiring Process
Step 1: Application review (resume portfolio required)
Step 2: Interview (30-45 minutes professional discussion)
Step 3: Paid trial project ($30/hour minimum | 1 week)
Target Start: 2-4 weeks from application
