Job Summary

Responsible for all aspects of the diagnostic physics program and radiologic technology at Corewell Health. Responsibilities include clinical duties, innovation, teaching, research, service to the Corewell Health enterprise and career development through leadership of the Diagnostic Medical Physics team as well as involvement in professional societies. Within Imaging and for departments that use imaging in other service lines, responsible for image quality and radiation safety for patients and employees 

 

Along with the Diagnostic Medical Physics team, provides consultant services to the organization, as well as the physicians, in the clinical use of all imaging modalities. Radiologic technology responsibilities include support for optimizing clinical protocols. Actively participates in departmental projects including radiation shielding evaluation as well as operational requirements for imaging equipment. 

 

As Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), responsible for compliance with Federal (NRC) and State of Michigan regulations pertaining to the use of radiation. This individual in this position will be expected to be the named RSO on the Corewell Health West NRC license 

 

Certification by either the American Board of Radiology in Nuclear Medicine Physics is required or must be obtained within 9 months of hire. Alternative certification by the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine in Nuclear Medicine Physics and Instrumentation. 

Essential Functions

 Oversees the activities of the physicists and any other staff assigned to the physics and 

technology area. Is responsible to insure that all imaging equipment is evaluated and satisfactorily operates according to standards. 

 Serves as the Qualified Medical Physicist for Imaging at Corewell Health West. This includes oversight of modality accreditation efforts and technical aspects of the department quality assurance program, which includes routine equipment quality control and initial and annual performance testing, technical review of proposed equipment specifications, as well as optimization of the imaging and dose characteristics of imaging equipment within the system. 

 Serves as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) for Spectrum Health Hospitals, Grand Rapids and manages the functions of the SHH Radiation Safety Committee. Provides technical expertise regarding radiation safety issues, writing and reviewing policies and procedures, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulatory and Joint Commission standards. Monitors all employees exposed to ionizing radiation, as appropriate, to ensure that exposure is within federal and state limits and calculates patient doses. 

 Provides calculations for shielding design of diagnostic x-ray, computerized tomography (CT) and nuclear medicine rooms, including single photon emission computed tomography/CT (SPECT/CT) and positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) and verifies integrity of newly installed protective barriers and provides reports for federal and state agencies. 

 Acts as a consultant to and works with other members of the team on treatment techniques for optimization of radiation dose delivery, program development, and implementation of new technologies and treatment techniques. 

 Provides radiological physics and radiation safety education to Diagnostic Radiology and Interventional Radiology residents as well as physicians, technologists, and other hospital and nursing employees as appropriate. 

 Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning and assigning work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. 

Ensures that processes and services are continuously monitored for quality, cost effectiveness, and efficiencyEngages in process and quality improvement activitiesMakes and implements recommendations to improve operational efficiency and to implement new services for areas of responsibility. 

 Actively participates in safety initiatives and risk mitigating measures where appropriate and completes all position and unit safety related competencies and requirements on a timely basis. 

 Performs other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Required Master's Degree Radiological or Medical Physics
  • Preferred Doctorate Radiological or Medical Physics
  • 5 years of relevant experience in diagnostic imaging with specialization in nuclear medicine imaging Required
  • 2 years of relevant experience participation in a radiation safety program Required
  • 1 year of relevant experience Administrative and supervisory Preferred
  • CRT-Medical Physics - ABR American Board of Radiology Nucelar Medicine Physics Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Nuclear Medicine Physics and Instrumentation - American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine Upon Hire required
