The Department of Pathology is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist Supervisor to ensure the smooth, efficient operation of a clinical laboratory unit or shift. Performs clinical laboratory analyses on biological specimens to provide information used in the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease. Many of the procedures involve numerous highly complex tests and techniques that require the use of professional judgment. This position will have responsibility for leading other laboratory professionals and continuously interacting and consulting with section management and other allied health care professionals.

 

This position can be filled at either 90 or 100%. 20-24 hours must be worked on Saturday and Sunday. Remaining hours can be completed during the week. Applicants should come prepared to present a suitable schedule to the interview team.

Duties to include:

·         Serves as a primary in-house supervisory staff member for the Core Laboratory during weekend shifts; also serves as the initial in-house leadership contact for the Department of Pathology on those weekend shifts. Uses appropriate judgement to resolve issues within span of control; for issues outside span of control demonstrates appropriate judgement in either communicating issues for further follow up on next business day or escalates critical or urgent issues for immediate follow up.

·         Escalates problems or operational issues as necessary.

·         Communicate project statuses to appropriate others and manages customer expectations effectively.

·         Perform quantitative and qualitative analyses on clinical and research specimens.

·         Communicate and disseminate general information and policy or procedure changes to unit/shift personnel.

·         Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

·         A Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology program from an accredited college/university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.

·         One (1) – three (3) years clinical laboratory experience within the past five (5) years is required.

·         One (1) – three (3) years of experience with high complexity testing is required for any position that will oversee a unit which performs high complexity testing.

·         **Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or specialist certification in appropriate laboratory discipline from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) from Health Education and Welfare (HEW) is required.

·         Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.

·         Demonstrated leadership abilities and skills shown by successfully leading teams/groups in projects, work assignments, policy updates, etc. is required.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

·         Experience with validation and implementation of new testing or instruments.

·         Experience with laboratory inspection and accreditation activities.

·         Experience working in an academic health center.

·         Knowledge of and applied experience working with collective bargaining work rules.

·         Experience developing and delivering laboratory sciences-based technical training.

·         Experience working with total laboratory automation.

·         Experience working with middleware.

·         System to instrument interface experience.

·         Excellent documentation skills.
