Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Port Captain to lead and oversee tug and barge operations in Hawaii. This pivotal role involves managing vessel performance, supporting crew members, and ensuring all operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards within a unionized environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Hawaii fleet
  • Act as the primary liaison between vessel crews and shoreside management.
  • Support and mentor captains and crew to promote operational excellence.
  • Ensure compliance with USCG, OSHA, and company safety standards.
  • Monitor vessel performance, coordinate maintenance, and ensure operational readiness.
  • Collaborate with Port Engineers and maintenance teams to address technical needs.
  • Lead incident investigations, safety reporting, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain strong working relationships within a union (IBU) environment.
  • Participate in crew management, scheduling, and workforce planning.
  • Engage directly with vessel crews and be actively involved in field operations.

Requirements

  • Previous experience in marine operations, with tug and barge experience preferred.
  • Sailing experience as a Captain, Mate, or in a similar leadership role.
  • Strong understanding of vessel operations, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience working within union environments is highly preferred.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage crews in dynamic settings.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Must be comfortable working closely with crews and being present in the field.
  • Ability to handle high-visibility responsibilities with a focus on operational performance.
  • Ideal for candidates seeking to transition into or advance within shoreside leadership roles.
