Emulation Engineer: Automated Material Handling Systems

Job Summary

Core Group Resources is hiring an Emulation Engineer to support the development, testing, and implementation of automated material handling and conveyor systems. You'll build and maintain virtual models that replicate how physical equipment operates, so controls systems can be tested and validated before and during commissioning.

This is a strong opportunity for an early-career professional with experience or education in industrial automation, controls, mechatronics, or programming. Most of the work is done in an office alongside a multidisciplinary project team, with occasional travel to customer and project sites for data gathering, system reviews, and commissioning support.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and update custom conveyor and equipment models that replicate real-world physics, geometry, and system behavior.
  • Support emulation and virtual commissioning of automated material handling systems.
  • Build a working knowledge of conveyor and material handling technologies, including belted conveyors, CDLR, skid systems, overhead power and free, MDR, shoe sorters, and ARB systems.
  • Review project scopes, drawings, and technical requirements to understand system functionality and expectations.
  • Work with project engineers, controls engineers, and project managers to resolve questions and meet project requirements.
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate status, technical issues, and next steps.
  • Interact with customers to gather information, review requirements, and support project execution.
  • Create and maintain internal technical documentation, processes, and standards to improve consistency across projects.
  • Travel occasionally to customer or project sites.
  • Support continuous improvement of engineering processes and tools.
  • Depending on experience, assist with scheduling, task allocation, technical reviews, quality control, and mentoring junior team members.

Requirements

  • Technical certificate, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant technical experience.
  • Ability to read technical documentation, system requirements, and engineering drawings.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear communication with engineering teams, project managers, and customers.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work safely at active construction, manufacturing, or industrial sites when needed. This includes climbing stairs and ladders, working around operating machinery and noise, and following PPE and site safety procedures.

Preferred Requirements

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in industrial automation, controls, mechatronics, software development, material handling, manufacturing, or a related field.
  • Working knowledge of a programming or scripting language such as Python, C#, JavaScript, or Java.
  • Working knowledge of PLC programming and ladder logic.
  • Familiarity with OPC or other industrial communication technologies.
  • Experience with CAD, 3D modeling, simulation, or emulation software.
  • Exposure to conveyor, sortation, material handling, robotics, or industrial automation systems.
  • Familiarity with virtual commissioning, equipment simulation, or digital twin concepts.
