Lead O&M Engineer
Summary
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Lead Operations & Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the startup, operation, and shut down of the Energy Center Minneapolis district heating and cooling plants in a safe, reliable, and efficient manner to meet all steam, hot water, and chilled water load requirements. The primary objective is to safely, reliably, and efficiently operate boilers, chillers, and auxiliary equipment.
Principle Responsibilities/Key Results Areas
- Provide shift leadership and operational decision making; ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations; report plant/equipment problems to plant management.
- Direct the operation of Energy Center Minneapolis district heating and cooling plants, which are operated and controlled from the Main Plant control room
- Coordinate operation of satellite plants to meet overall system needs (i.e. First Ave Plant, Convention Center Plant, Baker Plant, Dayton’s Plant, Foster House Plant, North Riverfront Plant, HCEC and HERC interconnects).
- Provide job orientation, technical advice, and operator training to present and newly employed operators.
- Monitor all operator workstations, assuring that logs and records are maintained as prescribed by plant management; complete necessary documentation and plant paperwork as required.
- Monitor the CEM and assure that boilers are properly logged on and off and that boiler #4 MPCA emission limits are not exceeded; assure that oil samples are taken on a daily basis whenever heavy oil is fired; monitor pH level wastewater to assure that MCES sewer regulations are adhered to.
- Divide the workload on the shift between the lead and the second operator for the most efficient plant operation.
- Observe and comply with all safety requirements and take the necessary steps to protect personnel and equipment from harm in the event of an emergency situation.
- Provide thorough knowledge of lockout/tagout (LOTO) policies and procedures; responsible for the control room LOTO logbook.
- Share equally with ‘2nd Man’ operator on facility cleaning area assignments.
- Initiate work requests in Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for plant equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by plant management (i.e. facility cleaning, customer meter reading, etc.).
- Assist plant management with project development and execution.
- Support plant management in providing training for O&M Engineers and other plant personnel as subject matter expert.
Requirements
Experience and Education
- Must have a State of Minnesota First Class “A” Operating Engineer’s License.
- At least five (5) years’ plant operations, maintenance, and/or distribution system experience. Knowledge and Skills
- Operating knowledge of the Energy Center Minneapolis main plant, satellite plants, and steam interconnects.
- Ability to lead, direct, and train other operating personnel.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in working with steam and chilled water equipment, steam turbines, etc.
- Knowledgeable and experienced in the hazards of operating steam and chilled water equipment.
- Knowledgeable in MPCA air emission permit operating limitations; familiar with #4 boiler CEM system and NOx, opacity, and SO2 emission limits; familiar with MPCA fuel oil limitations on boilers #1, #2, and #3.
