Copperweld is seeking a skilled Machinist with strong experience in machining, part design, and drawing creation. This role focuses on producing precision components, improving existing machined parts, and supporting equipment and process upgrades. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and able to turn mechanical concepts into accurate, manufacturable parts, while also assisting with material planning and machine shop inventory needs.
WHAT We Need You To Do.
Machining & Fabrication
- Set up, program, and operate CNC and manual mills, lathes, and related shop equipment
- Machine precision components according to drawings, specifications, and best practices
- Perform inspections using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other measurement tools
- Troubleshoot machining issues, adjust tooling, and optimize methods for efficiency and quality
- Create or revise part drawings using CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360, etc.)
- Translate concepts, sketches, and worn/damaged parts into accurate technical drawings
- Evaluate existing components and recommend design or material improvements to enhance durability and performance
- Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams to improve equipment reliability through upgraded machined components
- Develop prototypes and test fit/function as needed
- Identify raw material requirements based on job needs, drawings, and upcoming projects
- Order metals, plastics, tooling, and consumables to support machining operations
- Maintain organized material storage, labeling, and stock rotation within the machine shop
- Monitor inventory levels and proactively reorder to prevent production delays
- Coordinate with purchasing, maintenance, and engineering teams to ensure correct materials and specifications
- Analyze machining processes and suggest improvements for speed, consistency, and precision
- Assist in modifying or fabricating custom tooling, fixtures, and machine attachments
- Support maintenance teams in understanding part function and assisting with rebuilds or upgrades
- Maintain clean, organized machining workspaces and follow safety practices
- 5–10 years of machining experience (CNC and manual)
- Skilled in CAD drafting and interpreting blueprints/GD&T
- Ability to design or redesign parts for improved performance, manufacturability, and longevity
- Strong knowledge of machining materials, tooling, speeds/feeds, and tolerances
- Proficient with inspection tools and quality standards
- Hands-on problem solver with strong mechanical aptitude
- Experience selecting appropriate materials for machining applications
- Experience improving industrial equipment or process components
- Background in fixture and jig design
- Experience reverse-engineering legacy or specialty parts
- Familiarity with material procurement and shop inventory systems
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
