Job Description

Location: North Salt Lake, Utah

Type: Full Time Minimum

Experience: Entry-level Position

About The Position:

A General Laborer is responsible for general laborer duties on construction sites and possess a basic knowledge of proper use and care of small tools and equipment. Knowledge also includes some basic operation of equipment required for basic tasks that may be performed. They may prepare sites by cleaning them, loading or unloading materials, digging trenches, compacting earth, and removing hazards.

Education/Experience

6 months experience working as laborer on construction worksite preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

Safety

  • Know and follow all company, client and OSHA safety rules and company policies and procedures.
  • Complete all required safety reporting within 24 hours.

Construction

  • Prepare construction sites by clearing obstacles and hazards.
  • Identify, use, and operate various equipment, hand, and power tools applicable to the task.
  • Proficient in the safe and efficient use of layout tools, and measurement tools.
  • Measure and mark pipes for cutting.
  • Ability to load or unload construction materials, pipe, and equipment.
  • Dig, spread, and level dirt and gravel, using pick, rake, shovel, etc.
  • Dig up existing pipes and lines.
  • Prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
  • Use chains, slings, or guide wires to rig pipes, trench boxes, and slide rail shoring systems.
  • Guide pipes and shoring devices into place, assisting the equipment operator.
  • Remove, fill, or compact earth.
  • Work safely around heavy equipment, and people at all times.

  • Assist all workers and perform daily job site housekeeping and cleanup.
  • Troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Move from job to job as projects progress.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Display a willing attitude to learn from others and possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Focus to work safely in close proximity to heavy equipment and underground utilities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a fast paced, team environment.
  • Ability to travel to areas of remote construction project location when required.

Physical Requirements

  • Meet all conditions of COP’s drug and alcohol testing requirements, including pass pre-employment and random drug screen and alcohol test.
  • Able and willing to work extended hours and possible nights and weekends, as required.
  • Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, work at heights and in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
  • Good hand to eye coordination.
  • Able to perform work wearing personal protective equipment. Including, but not limited to, the following: hard hat, ear plugs, safety glasses, task applicable gloves, rain gear, chemical protective clothing, supplied air and air purifying respirators, safety harness, sand blast hoods, and fire-resistant coveralls.
