What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Laborer position at Cooper Steel?
The General Laborer will act as a support person within the Self Perform Group, working directly with the Ironworkers, General Foremen, and other members of the on-site team. They will be responsible for spotting, preventing, and putting out any potential fires as well as other assigned daily tasks.

Education And/ Or Experience
Must have clear and effective communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills: ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of individuals; good judgment; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to work effectively with others. While performing certain duties of the job, the employee is required to see, talk, hear, use fingers/hands, handle/feel, and reach with arms/hands. Lifting is required up to 75 lbs. Flexibility in hours worked and willingness to work overtime as required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position performs work regularly on-site at the construction work site, which includes a variety of working conditions. These include the following conditions: noise level fluctuations from moderate to high, use of personal protective equipment, machine/equipment use, weather conditions, etc. Position involves everyday risks or exposure to elements that require safety precautions. The position will be required to work in adverse weather conditions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Promote a strong quality culture throughout the company maintaining Cooper Steel’s core priorities: Safety, Quality, Production
- Patrol Assigned watch area for any fires or potential fires
- Have a basic understanding of safety procedures and how to implement and uphold them
- Maintain safety features, such as fire extinguishers as stated in the safety manual
- Survey the workspace for any potential risks or leaks before, during, and after the workday
- Prepare to operate fire extinguishers or other flame-retardant equipment
- Remain vigilant on-site whenever employees are working
- Contact and inform emergency personnel as soon as any issues arise
- Report any signs of smoke
- Make sure all equipment is in good working order
- Clean up litter or other waster when spotted in work area
- Provide clear, agreed upon, and safe signals to equipment operators
- Coordinate pedestrians and site traffic
- Direct the movement of machines
- Communicate and give directions to operators and drivers as needed
- Other duties as assigned.

- High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred
- Valid Driver’s License – Required
