Job Overview:

Works on a team of two operators: a batch operator and a field operator, responsible for the safety, production, maintenance, and equipment operations of the Liquid Sodium Silicate (LSS) department. Responsible for cleaning and basic maintenance of the production systems, which include steam autoclaves, bucket elevator, centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, bag house, chemical offloading stations, tank farm, and other equipment in support of the chemical operation. Monitors and operates the chemical production systems. Interacts with maintenance personnel, contractors, technical and professional staff, and department supervisors.

Reports to: LSS Manager

Job Type: Full-time Non-exempt

Schedule:

  • Work hours will be rotating 12-hour shift of 6:30am to 6:30pm and 6:30pm to 6:30am with 36 hours worked in week one and 48 hours in week two.
  • Rotating shifts include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • On occasion, may work outside these hours for training and to support operational needs.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Works on a team of two: a batch operator and a field operator; which regularly interacts with maintenance workers, contract employees, technical and professional employees, and department supervisors.
  • Ensures all equipment is well-maintained and runs safely and efficiently.
  • Monitors the operation of systems and equipment, records data, adjusts process controls as required; and, identifies, reports, and tracks maintenance needs through the work order process.
  • Completes repeated process tasks such as cleaning filters, charging vessels, and transferring product.
  • Maintains equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly manner and implements continuous improvement initiatives to optimize equipment performance and appearance.
  • Monitors, directs, and manages daily personnel workflows within the plan, including issuing work permits and coordinating tasks with maintenance teams, mechanics, and external contractors to ensure compliance with operational procedures and maintain plant safety.
  • Operates front-end loader for raw materials handling and forklift for process waste disposal.
  • Manipulates plant parameters and controls equipment operation using a distributed control system.
  • Performs equipment isolation and energy control (de-energization) using lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and issues safe work permits to ensure maintenance activities are conducted safely and in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and regulatory requirements.
  • Assists the supervisor with documenting and training requirements, SOPs, preventative maintenance programs, and benchmarking activities.
  • Utilizes chemical testing equipment to ensure product quality is within specification.
  • Conducts routine safety, environmental, housekeeping, and regulatory compliance inspections; documents findings/activities; and ensures preventative maintenance programs are maintained.
  • Participates in safety audits and site safety process activities to ensure regulations and standards are met or exceeded, including job safety analyses (JSAs).
  • Performs limited process waste management activities such as waste movement and labeling.
  • Performs limited maintenance operations with and without support from maintenance personnel.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and safety procedures, including ISO standards, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Familiarity with regulations and safety requirements in an industrial setting.

Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required; an Associate’s degree and/or certificate in industrial work skills such as industrial maintenance, automated technology, welding, etc. is preferred.

Minimum Experience: 2 years of experience with industrial or commercial maintenance or operations is required; 5 years of chemical production operations and certification in forklift or other heavy equipment is preferred.

Certifications & Licenses: Valid driver’s license

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities: N/A

Physical Requirements: Possess close visual acuity to perform visual inspection involving small defects, small parts; acuity to operate machines and determine accuracy; ability to maintain balance; stand for sustained periods; walk; perform fingering such as picking; grasp objects; talk; hear effectively; make repetitive motions of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers; and, exert up to 50lbs of force occasionally, 20lbs of force frequently and/or 10lbs constantly.

Working Conditions: Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions; temperature levels below 32 degrees and above 100 degrees for more than one hour; noise levels where one may need to shout to be heard; vibrations; hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, and working in high places; exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, oils, and other cutting fluids; and requires wearing a respirator.

Pay: $23.00 - $38.00/hour, based on education, skills, and experience

Bonus: 5%, based on company and personal performance
