Cook’s Direct is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to lead the company’s accounting and financial operations. The Controller administers and maintains company accounting records, provides financial leadership across planning, cash management, and budgeting, and ensures the integrity of financial reporting. This role oversees the accounting team and partners closely with the CEO to support fiscal soundness and the long-term operating effectiveness of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, analyze, and interpret statistical and accounting information to evaluate profitability, performance against budget, and the overall fiscal soundness of the organization
- Maintain the company’s system of accounts in Microsoft Dynamics Business Central, ensuring accurate books and records for all company transactions and assets
- Lead, mentor, and evaluate the performance of the accounting team, including the Accounting Manager, Staff Accountants, AP/AR Clerks, Collections
- Prepare the annual budget and ongoing financial forecasts; establish and maintain planning and control procedures; analyze and report on variances
- Direct tax planning and ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, payroll, and other applicable taxes; oversee the use of Avalara
- Produce internal and external reporting using Power BI, refining reports to increase clarity, usefulness, and efficiency
- Prepare and provide monthly bank compliance documents
- Coordinate worksheets and supporting schedules for the outside CPA firm and oversee the annual review
- Oversee cash management practices, including credit and collections of customer accounts
- Manage company credit cards and corporate payment programs
- Financial and fiduciary oversight of employee benefits programs, including health insurance, 401(k), and other benefits
- Manage the renewal process for corporate insurance programs, including worker’s compensation, property and casualty, auto, D&O, product liability, and group insurance
- Other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- 5 years of experience handling daily and monthly accounting functions
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls
- Demonstrated leadership experience supervising an accounting team
- Advanced Excel skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, including the ability to present financial results to executive leadership
- Experience in a distribution, wholesale, or e-commerce environment
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Dynamics Business Central
- Experience with Avalara for sales-tax compliance
- Experience building and maintaining reports in Power BI
- CPA certification
