Restorative Justice Job Description

A Restorative Justice (RJ) Trainer designs and facilitates training programs, workshops, and coaching sessions on restorative principles (e.g., peace circles, conferencing, dialogue techniques) for staff, community members, or youth. They build capacity to manage conflict, foster accountability, and repair harm, often implementing trauma-informed, proactive approaches to behavior.

Key Responsibilities

  • Training & Curriculum Development: Design, develop, and lead training sessions on restorative justice principles, communication, and circle-keeping for staff and community members.
  • Coaching & Modeling: Model restorative practices in real-time scenarios, providing individual or team coaching/feedback to enhance skill development.
  • Facilitation: Lead restorative justice circles, conferences, or mediations to address conflict, harm, or behavioral issues.
  • System Implementation: Work with leadership to integrate restorative, trauma-informed practices into organizational policies (e.g., school-wide discipline protocols).
  • Collaboration & Support: Collaborate with stakeholders (parents, community, staff) and offer consultation on preventative strategies, ensuring a safe environment.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience: Previous experience in conducting training, workshops, or professional development.
  • RJ Knowledge: Strong understanding of restorative justice philosophies, trauma-informed care, and nonviolent communication.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to facilitate challenging conversations.
  • Flexibility: Ability to adapt to the needs of diverse populations, including potential evening or weekend work.
  • Education: Typically requires a bachelor's degree in social work, education, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
