Position Summary
The Engineering Technician / CNC Programmer provides technical support to the engineering department in the areas of product development, process improvement, and manufacturing support. This position also serves as the primary resource for CNC programming and optimization of router operations. The successful candidate will possess strong technical aptitude, a high attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with both engineering and production personnel in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Engineering Support
- Assist in the setup, operation, and troubleshooting of production equipment (e.g., panel cutting, laminating, fabric wrapping, CNC machining, and adhesive application).
- Maintain process documentation, such as work instructions, setup sheets, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support day-to-day manufacturing operations by addressing technical issues on the floor.
- Assist in the design, development, testing, and documentation of new and existing products.
- Prepare and maintain detailed technical drawings, layouts, and production documentation using AutoCAD.
- Support process improvement initiatives aimed at increasing manufacturing efficiency, consistency, and quality.
- Collaborate with engineers to design and test jigs, fixtures, and tooling for repeatable, high-quality production.
- Participate in lean manufacturing, 5S, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Compile, organize, and analyze data using Microsoft Word and Excel to support engineering and production reporting.
- Conduct dimensional and visual inspections on acoustic panels to ensure compliance with specifications and finish standards.
- Collect and analyze process data to identify trends and root causes of defects.
- Work with quality and engineering teams to develop and maintain quality control procedures.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and resolve product or process issues.
- Support new product introductions by helping transition prototypes into full-scale production.
CNC Programming and Manufacturing Support
- Develop, modify, and optimize CNC router programs for the production of architectural acoustic components.
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to ensure accurate machining outcomes.
- Support the setup and operation of CNC equipment, including troubleshooting as needed.
- Maintain an organized library of CNC programs, tooling information, and related documentation.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of CNC machining processes and related workflows.
Qualifications and Requirements
Required:
- Associate degree or technical certification in engineering technology, manufacturing technology, or a related discipline (or equivalent practical experience).
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
Preferred:
- Understanding of mechanical fabrication, adhesives, CNC machinery, and finishing processes.
- Experience with CNC programming (G-code or CAM-based software).
- Familiarity with production control systems or ERP/MRP software.
- Knowledge of woodworking, composites, adhesive lamination or architectural product manufacturing processes.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels.
- Standing, bending, and moving between workstations throughout the factory floor.
