Field Service Technician

Converting Equipment International (CEI) | Remote / Home-Based | 50-75% Travel

Position Summary

CEI is seeking a home-based Field Service Technician with hands-on web handling / converting experience and strong industrial troubleshooting skills. This role travels to customer facilities for new equipment installation, startup support, operator training, troubleshooting, and service. When not traveling, the technician provides remote service support, responds to service emails and calls, and assists with replacement parts. The position reports to the Service Manager.

What You Will Do

· Travel to customer facilities for equipment installation, startup support, troubleshooting, repair, and service.

· Train operators and maintenance personnel on machine function, setup, adjustments, and basic troubleshooting.

· Diagnose web-handling and process issues involving tension, tracking, guiding, unwinding, rewinding, nips, slitting, roll quality, and operator setup.

· Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, sensor, servo, VFD, encoder, and motion-control issues.

· Restore newly delivered CEI machines to their known-good tested operating condition after shipment and verify proper operation with customer material.

· Provide remote troubleshooting support by phone and email when not traveling.

· Identify replacement and service parts using drawings, BOMs, manuals, and machine records.

· Document service findings, repairs, recommended follow-up, and unresolved issues.

· Work with the Service Manager, Engineering, and other CEI resources when additional support is required.

Qualifications

· Hands-on experience with web handling, converting, printing, slitting, rewinding, laminating, coating, or similar roll-to-roll equipment is highly desirable, but not an absolute requirement. CEI is willing to train the right candidate.

· Practical knowledge of web tension, tracking, guiding, unwind and rewind behavior, and how machine adjustments affect the web is highly desirable.

· Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting ability, including the ability to reason through unfamiliar problems.

· Practical experience with industrial motion systems, including servos, VFDs, encoders, sensors, and machine controls. Specific controller brand experience is not required.

· Ability to read electrical schematics and use standard diagnostic tools such as a multimeter.

· Strong communication and customer-service skills, with the ability to explain machine operation and adjustments clearly to operators and maintenance personnel.

· Ability to work independently, make sound decisions in the field, and know when to escalate an issue.

· Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record suitable for company travel and rental-car use.

· Must comply with CEI's drug-free workplace and fitness-for-duty requirements.

Travel and Schedule

· Approximately 50-75% travel, primarily within the United States.

· CEI schedules travel in advance whenever possible; short-notice travel within the same week may occasionally be required when a customer is down or has an urgent service need.

· Weekend travel or weekend work is not routine, but may occasionally be necessary due to customer needs, project completion, or travel schedules.

· Customer training may occasionally require second-shift, third-shift, or other non-standard hours.

· Occasional international travel is expected, typically about 3-5 trips per year, which may include Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, or other customer locations.

· A current passport is preferred. If not currently held, the successful candidate must be willing and able to obtain one after hire.

Professional Expectations

· Represent CEI professionally at customer facilities and while traveling on company business.

· Maintain a clean, neat, professional appearance and appropriate personal hygiene for a customer-facing industrial service position.

· Report to work and customer facilities fit for duty and free from impairment.

· Communicate clearly with customers and keep them informed of findings, next steps, and unresolved items.

· Take ownership of assigned service issues and work toward complete resolution while recognizing when additional CEI resources are needed.

· Use good judgment and make reasonable efforts to complete the customer's service or installation needs before departing the site.

· Support CEI's commitment to a frictionless customer experience.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to lift, carry, move, and handle tools, parts, and service equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.

· Ability to stand and walk for extended periods while working at customer facilities.

· Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, reach, climb steps or ladders when required, and work in and around industrial machinery.

· Ability to safely perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Training and Onboarding

Initial training is expected to include approximately two weeks at CEI's facility in Montana. Training will include working with machine assembly to understand internal systems and construction, participating in equipment testing and QC, learning CEI machine functionality, and gaining hands-on familiarity with CEI-specific web handling, controls, service procedures, and customer training expectations. CEI will provide additional product and web-handling training as needed for the right candidate.

What Matters Most

CEI values demonstrated capability over a specific number of years in the industry. Web-handling experience is highly desirable, but CEI will consider and train the right candidate who brings strong mechanical/electrical troubleshooting skills, practical motion-control experience, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate well with customers. Experience with Beckhoff, Yaskawa, or any specific controller brand is helpful but not required.
