Summary
The Director of Retail Janitorial Operations is responsible for leading and optimizing janitorial and facility services across a large retail portfolio. This role ensures consistent execution of cleaning standards, regulatory compliance, vendor performance, budget management, and customer-facing cleanliness programs that support exceptional shopping experiences and brand standards.
The Director partners with retail operations, facilities, procurement, field leadership, and service providers to develop scalable cleaning programs, drive operational efficiencies, improve service quality, and ensure safe, clean, and welcoming retail environments.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Develop and execute company-wide janitorial and cleaning strategies for retail locations.
- Establish and maintain cleaning standards, operating procedures, and quality assurance programs.
- Ensure consistent service delivery across all retail operatons.
- Monitor operational performance through audits, inspections, and KPI reporting.
- Lead initiatives that improve cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
Contract Management
- Manage relationships with retail client, operational leadership and janitorial staff.
- Develop and administer service-level performance metrics.
- Conduct regular business reviews with client to ensure compliance and service excellence.
- Drive continuous improvement and cost optimization across porfolio.
Financial Management
- Manage and adhere to annual operating budgets for janitorial services.
- Monitor labor, supplies, equipment, and contract expenses.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining service quality.
- Forecast expenses and provide financial reporting to executive leadership.
- Evaluate ROI for operational improvements, technology investments, and equipment purchases.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Implement quality control programs and retail inspection processes.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, local health regulations, and company safety standards.
- Manage corrective action plans for service deficiencies.
- Establish sanitation and infection-prevention protocols as needed.
- Monitor compliance with sustainability and environmental initiatives.
Field Operations Support
- Partner with account managers, safety manager and Operations teams to address service needs.
- Respond to escalated facility and cleanliness issues.
- Develop communication processes to ensure rapid resolution of operational concerns.
Strategic Planning & Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve janitorial operations.
- Implement technology solutions for inspections, work orders, reporting, and vendor management.
- Develop KPI dashboards and performance analytics.
- Benchmark industry best practices and implement operational improvements.
- Lead change management initiatives related to service delivery and operational excellence.
Team Leadership
- Lead and develop account and area managers, and support teams.
- Establish performance goals and accountability measures.
- Foster a culture of safety, service excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Support succession planning and leadership development initiatives.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Facilities Management, Operations Management, or related field.
- 10 years of experience in janitorial operations, facilities management, retail operations, or multi-site service management.
- 5 years of leadership experience managing large-scale, geographically dispersed operations.
- Strong financial, analytical, and project management skills.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety programs, and facility maintenance best practices.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
