The Position

Bargaining Unit: DSA - Deputy Sheriff's Non-Sworn Rank & File Unit

The Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff is the largest law enforcement agency in Contra Costa, with over 1,100 sworn and professional employees dedicated to providing the highest level of law enforcement and customer services.

The Office of the Sheriff serves over 1,000,000 residents across a 715-square mile area, offering a full range of services that distinguish it from most police agencies. These services include unincorporated area policing, contract cities (Danville, Lafayette, and Orinda) and special districts, air support (helicopters), marine patrol, dispatch, investigations, coroners, county detention facilities, custody alternatives, court security, forensic services, a police academy, and the Office of Emergency Services.

The Office of the Sheriff is recruiting to fill three (3) vacancies for the Sheriff’s Ranger position. Assignments will be made between Court Security Services and the Health Services Security Unit, based on operational needs.

Sheriff’s Rangers assigned to Court Security Services monitor secured public entrances at the County’s seven courthouses. Primary responsibilities include screening bags and property for weapons and contraband and supporting the safe, orderly operation of court facilities.

Sheriff’s Rangers assigned to the Health Services Security Unit assist Deputies at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center in Martinez by screening bags and property of individuals entering the hospital for weapons and contraband, and by providing security at the satellite clinics throughout the county.

  • Preparing routine paperwork and reports

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of State valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency, or a high school proficiency certificate.

Experience: Six (6) months of full-time or its equivalent experience in a position that involved substantial public contact or security related services.

Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age at time of application.

Background: Successful completion of a thorough background investigation conducted by the Office of the Sheriff.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience performing security or access-control duties in a court, hospital, or other secure public facility
  • Experience screening individuals or property for safety, security, or access control purposes
  • Experience preparing basic logs, reports, or documentation using computer systems
  • Experience communicating effectively in a second language in a public-facing setting
  • Experience independently responding to security incidents and coordinating with sworn law enforcement personnel

Selection Process

  • Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  • Online Multiple-Choice Assessment: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the Sheriff's Ranger Multiple-Choice Assessment. The assessment will be administered via a web-based platform and will be used to measure candidates' competencies as they relate to the Sheriff's Ranger classification. These may include but are not limited to: Decision-Making, Innovative Problem Solving, Safety Focus, Manual Dexterity, Handling Stress, Professional Integrity & Ethics, Informing, Customer Focus, Adaptability, and Oral Communication. (Weight 100%)
  • The sheriff's ranger multiple-choice assessment will be administered remotely using a computer. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to take the assessment. It is not recommended to take the exam using a mobile device such as a tablet or cellphone.
  • The multiple-choice assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) on: January 16, 2026 through January 21, 2026
  • Departmental Interviews: The department will reach out to referred candidates to schedule an interview - February 2026

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER

All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
