Position Overview:
We are seeking a dynamic, experienced ESL Instructor to deliver comprehensive English instruction to adult learners in our Intensive English Program and our part-time courses. The ideal candidate will create interactive and effective lesson plans, assess student progress, and foster a supportive classroom atmosphere that encourages participation and confidence. This role requires a strong commitment to student success, cultural sensitivity, and professional collaboration.
Key Responsibilities:
· Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging ESL lessons tailored to students’ proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced.
· Integrate all language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, and pronunciation) into lessons, with a focus on real-world communication.
· Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and materials to accommodate diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
· Assess and monitor student progress through regular quizzes, tests, assignments, and one-on-one feedback.
· Maintain an organized, respectful, and positive classroom environment.
· Participate in curriculum development, faculty meetings, and professional development opportunities.
· Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance.
Qualifications:
· Master’s degree in TESOL, Education, English, or Linguistics.
· TESOL/TEFL/CELTA certification required for candidates whose graduate degree is not in TESOL.
· Minimum of 2 years of experience teaching ESL to adult learners.
· Strong understanding of second language acquisition principles and communicative teaching methods.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
· Cultural competence and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
· Proficiency with educational technology and digital learning tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Classroom, LMS platforms).
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Knowledge of additional languages.
· Experience working overseas in the field of EFL.
· Experience preparing students for standardized English exams (e.g., TOEFL).
· Background in curriculum design or materials development.
Work Eligibility:
Because Hunter College is part of CUNY, instructors must reside within a commutable distance to New York City. Eligible locations include certain counties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. A full list of eligible counties will be provided during the hiring process.
