What are the responsibilities and job description for the CAD Drafting Specialist – Residential and Multi-Family position at Construction Management & Design, Inc?
Job Summary (Pay commensurate with experience)
Construction Management & Design, Inc. (CMD) is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented CAD Drafting Specialist to join our team. This position will primarily focus on modifying, revising, updating, and maintaining existing residential and multi-family housing plans.
The ideal candidate will have strong proficiency in AutoCAD or similar software, a good understanding of residential and multi-family construction, and the ability to take existing plans and accurately make changes based on project requirements.
This is a hands-on drafting position rather than a traditional architectural design role. While there will be opportunities for some design and layout work, the primary responsibility will be producing and maintaining accurate, professional construction drawings from existing plans, sketches, field measurements, and project specifications.
Duties
- Modify and revise existing residential and multi-family construction plans.
- Update floor plans, elevations, sections, details, dimensions, notes, and other drawing components.
- Make changes to existing plans based on project requirements, field conditions, construction needs, and management direction.
- Convert sketches, markups, redlines, and field measurements into accurate CAD drawings.
- Maintain and update existing plan sets as projects change.
- Prepare revised drawings for use by project managers, contractors, subcontractors, and construction personnel.
- Assist with creating new drawings and layouts when needed.
- Review drawings for accuracy, consistency, dimensions, and constructability.
- Maintain organized CAD files, drawing standards, templates, and project documentation.
- Incorporate revisions and maintain accurate records of drawing changes.
- Assist with preparing plans for permitting and construction.
- Coordinate drawing information with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and site requirements.
- Review existing plans and identify potential conflicts, inconsistencies, or missing information.
- Communicate with project managers, construction personnel, contractors, engineers, and other consultants regarding drawing revisions and requirements.
- Research building codes and other requirements as necessary to assist with plan revisions.
- Perform other drafting and construction-documentation duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Strong proficiency with AutoCAD or similar software.
- Previous experience in CAD drafting, construction drafting, architectural drafting, or a related field.
- Ability to read, understand, and modify residential construction drawings.
- Good understanding of residential construction methods, materials, and building components.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work independently.
- Ability to organize and maintain multiple drawing files and projects.
- Experience with residential and/or multi-family construction preferred.
- Experience modifying existing construction plans preferred.
- Experience working for a home builder, developer, contractor, property management company, architectural firm, or engineering firm.
- Experience producing construction drawing sets.
- Familiarity with residential building codes and permitting requirements.
- Understanding of basic structural framing and building systems.
- Associate's degree or technical certification in drafting, CAD, architectural technology, engineering technology, or a related field.
The ideal candidate is a skilled CAD drafter who understands construction.
You don't need to be an architect, and we are not looking for someone whose primary interest is conceptual architectural design. We are looking for someone who can take an existing plan, understand what needs to change, and accurately make those changes.
A successful candidate should be comfortable receiving a marked-up plan or a set of instructions such as:
"Move this wall three feet, change this unit from a two-bedroom to a three-bedroom, modify the bathroom layout, update the dimensions, and revise the elevations."
You should be able to understand the request, make the necessary changes in AutoCAD, and produce a clean, accurate drawing that can be used by our construction team.
The successful candidate will be:
- Detail-oriented
- Construction-minded
- Highly proficient with AutoCAD or similar software
- Organized
- Practical and analytical
- A good problem solver
- Able to interpret existing drawings
- Comfortable making frequent revisions
- Able to work independently
