Firefighter

POSITION SUMMARY

Responds with a team to provide fire suppression, rescue activities, emergency medical service, hazardous materials mitigation, and other special operations. Firefighters also provide Fire Prevention, Safety, and other Emergency Support services, emergency preparation, maintain facilities, vehicles and equipment, and attend training and professional development sessions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Controls and extinguishes fires, protect lives and property.
• Maintain vehicles and equipment and all monitoring of alarm systems, sprinkler systems and extinguisher units & systems at the site.
• Regular inspections and testing of alarm and monitoring systems including tie-ins to municipal fire stations.
• Trained in the handling, extinguishing and cleanup of hazardous, toxic, and special irradiated materials.
• Inspect buildings and property for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances and site procedures.
• Task specific training will be provided for specified equipment.
• Provides all other Emergency Support services.
• Aligns energy isolation devices and implements the Lock Out/Tag Out procedure in support of maintenance activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Requires a High School diploma or GED; minimum age 21 before entering any phase of application process.
• Position requires Kentucky State Firefighter II, Emergency Medical Technician, and NFPA HAZ-MAT technician level qualified.
• Confined Space Rescue Technician certification is preferred.
• Certification and training to meet all federal, state, DOE and local and site regulations specific to emergency response and support.
• Maintain FF standards/certifications outlined in NFPA 1583 to include applicable physical fitness, medical and equipment proficiency standards.
• Successful completion of the RAD WORKER TRAINING: RAD Core Academic, RAD Site Specific, RAD II Practical
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an active DOE security clearance.
• Wear protective clothing and gear per site policy and procedures and all applicable state and local regulations.
• Reach for and manipulate objects, hand or power tools, materials, and/or equipment.
• Lift and carry objects such as tools and materials weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
• Stand, walk, or sit for long periods. Stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and/or crawl frequently for extended periods of time.
• Climb, work on ladders, scaffolds, other facilities, and equipment, work at heights and confined spaces.
• Maintain a valid state drivers' license.
• Must be respirator certified and wear necessary PPE
• Near visual acuity, normally corrected. Ability to detect safety alarms through audio and visual means.
• Work for extended periods at low or high temperatures.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical.
• Could be included in the temperature extremes monitoring program background and drug-screen examination, as well as periodic random drug screens.
• Experience in an industrial setting as a fire fighter, or a minimum of four years' experience in related work, or a combination of education and/or training/experience that provides an equivalent background is desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS  

Work is typically based on a busy office environment and subject to frequent interruptions. Business work hours some extended, or weekend hours may be required.   

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

May be required to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 25 lbs. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching, and bending throughout the workday.
