Overview

Join Con Edisons Protective Relay Strategy Implementation (PRSI) team and support the advancement of Protection and Control (P&C) systems critical to the clean energy transition.

The Section Manager of P&C Standards provides leadership and technical oversight for the development and maintenance of relay protection and control standards, ensuring safety, quality, efficiency, and regulatory compliance.

This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the execution of Protection and Control (P&C) standards initiatives aligned with the vision and strategic objectives of the PRSI department.
  • Plan, direct, and oversee the development of comprehensive relay protection standards for transmission, subtransmission, and area stations, including relay philosophies, settings templates, calculation tools, drawings, testing templates, part numbers, and P&C scope documents.
  • Incorporate lessons learned from internal events and industry experience into standard designs to improve system performance, safety, and operational excellence.
  • Evaluate industry best practices, emerging technologies, and new hardware/software solutions to enhance existing standards or develop new ones.
  • Perform engineering analyses and support the deployment of protection system modernization and upgrade programs.
  • Support PRSI strategic initiatives that advance the design, operation, reliability, and resilience of P&C systems.
  • Collaborate with other PRSI sections, including protection system asset management and remote monitoring and analytics of substation P&C devices.
  • Manage vendor and contractor performance, including technical review of designs, scopes, and deliverables.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to implement relay protection standards, gather feedback, and manage expectations.
  • Conduct technical reviews to ensure relay protection designs align with approved standards and engineering practices.
  • Provide technical leadership and problemsolving expertise for complex relay protection and control system issues.
  • Directly manage, coach, and develop section personnel, including workload planning, performance management, technical guidance, and ensuring staff are trained and qualified to perform their assigned responsibilities.
  • Present technical and safety topics to organizational and executive leadership audiences.
  • Perform special projects and related assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years applicable work experience in the field of relay protection or power systems engineering. or
  • Master's Degree with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 6 years applicable work experience in the field of relay protection or power systems engineering.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 8 years applicable work experience in the field of relay protection or power systems engineering.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Strong technical competence and practical experience with relay protection systems at transmission, sub-transmission, or distribution level, required.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation communication skills, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels and motivate employees, required.
  • Strong computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, required.
  • Working knowledge of various microprocessor relay platforms, software, and IEC 61850 protocol, preferred.
  • Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF, IEEE and other organizations on P&C applications, preferred.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work in both an office environment and field locations.
