Danskammer Energy is seeking experienced Control Board Operators to support plant operations during a temporary staffing need. Due to operational requirements established by the New York Independent System Operator (NYISO), the facility must continue operating during an ongoing transition period and requires qualified operators to support reliable generation and control room operations.
The Control Board Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring high-pressure steam boilers and associated generating equipment to maintain safe, efficient, and reliable electric generation. This position requires prior control room experience in a conventional fossil-fueled power generation facility and the ability to quickly adapt to Danskammer's systems and operating procedures.
Assignment Duration: Approximately 2-3 months (temporary/contract assignment)
Facility Overview
Danskammer Energy is a peaking power plant that operates at the direction of the Independent System Operator (ISO) during times of peak electrical demand. The facility consists of:
- Four Combustion Engineering (CE) tangentially fired natural gas steam boilers
- Four GE tandem steam turbine generators
- Approximately 500 MW of generating capacity
- Two boilers utilizing fully electric/pneumatic (E/P) controls
- Two boilers utilizing Ovation Distributed Control System (DCS) controls
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate control boards and distributed control systems (DCS) associated with high-pressure steam boilers and steam turbine generators.
- Start, operate, monitor, and adjust boiler firing rates to match generation load requirements.
- Maintain proper boiler water levels, steam temperatures, steam pressures, fuel flow, and combustion air flows.
- Monitor plant equipment and respond appropriately to changing operating conditions.
- Maintain generator load as directed by plant operations and shift leadership.
- Work closely with the Shift Crew Leader and other operations personnel to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Respond to plant dispatch requirements and support startup activities when units are called online with short notice.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and take corrective action within established procedures.
- Maintain accurate operating logs and operational records.
- Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Prior experience working in the control room of a conventional, simple-cycle or fossil-fueled steam generating facility.
- Experience operating high-pressure steam boilers for electric generation.
- Experience using DCS systems to monitor and control boiler and generating operations.
- Thorough understanding of boiler operations, combustion control, steam systems, and generator load management.
- Ability to make sound operational decisions in a fast-paced environment.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screening and participate in random drug and alcohol testing programs.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with Emerson Ovation DCS systems.
- Experience operating tangentially fired natural gas boilers.
- Previous utility, merchant generation, or independent power producer experience.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work in hot, noisy industrial environments.
- Ability to climb stairs and access various plant areas.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
