This position is responsible for activities related to the operation of a coal-fired plant. The Coal Equipment Operator schedules, directs or assists in the unloading, stacking out, storing and reclaiming of coal as necessary in a safe and efficient manner so as to insure a sufficient coal flow to the station.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists the Coal Handling Supervisor.
  • Supervises and may schedule the work of other Coal Handling personnel.
  • Schedules, directs or assists in the unloading, stacking out, storing and reclaiming of coal as necessary in a safe and efficient manner so as to insure a sufficient coal flow to the station.
  • Is responsible for and maintains the safe and efficient operation of all coal handling equipment.
  • Is responsible for proper lubrication of all coal handling equipment.
  • Operates all coal mobile equipment, such as bulldozer, stacker reclaimer, car dumper or other allied coal equipment.
  • Inspects coal handling equipment for proper mechanical operation and makes repairs to the equipment.
  • Is responsible for the proper operation of weigh scales and coal sampling.
  • Assists in or conducts training programs for new employees.
  • Assists in or prepares requisitions for coal handling materials and supplies.
  • Performs routine clerical work.
  • Upon occasion or in emergency performs other related or less skilled work as required or directed.

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Post-secondary education in the power generation field is desired. Military experience related to power generation acceptable.

  • Successful completion of the Power Plant Operator Entrance Knowledge Exam.
  • Successful candidate will work as part of a team and ensure they are operating economically, efficiently, safely and within state/federal compliance at all times.
  • Competent computer skills.
  • Must be available for callouts/emergencies.
  • Good communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Working Conditions

  • Power plant environment. Work environment includes working out of doors, working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures and high humidity areas. Some temperatures can be extreme.
  • Work in and around rotating equipment, high voltage electrical equipment, high noise areas and elevations.
  • Emergency situations will require the use of a respirator and established facial hair in the sealing area of a respirator is not permitted.
  • Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE).

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record, as this position requires occasional travel for company business. Candidates should be comfortable operating a vehicle as part of their job responsibilities and must meet any applicable company and insurance requirements.
