Position Title: Accountant
Reports To: Finance Director
Status: Full-time
Position Summary: The Accountant supports Conserving Carolina’s financial operations through a combination of transaction processing, grant and fund accounting, and financial reporting. This role works closely with the Finance Director and an external accounting partner to ensure accurate records, strong internal controls, and effective financial processes.
This position is well-suited for an accounting professional with nonprofit experience who is comfortable managing detailed transactional work while contributing to financial reporting, compliance, and continuous improvement. The Accountant plays a key role in supporting the financial stewardship of conserved lands and community-driven programs.
Key Responsibilities:
Transaction Processing & Coordination
- Manage accounts payable and receivable processes, including invoice entry, billing, and payment coordination.
- Review transaction coding to ensure alignment with budgets, grants, and donor restrictions.
- Support cash management activities, including deposits, ACH transactions, and banking coordination.
- Support alignment between accounts payable activity and grant invoicing/reimbursement processes.
- Serve as a responsive and supportive resource to staff and vendors on financial processes and questions.
- Coordinate effectively with external accounting partners to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
Month-End Close & Financial Accuracy
- Support monthly close processes, including reconciliations and preparation of supporting schedules.
- Maintain accurate general ledger activity in coordination with outsourced accounting support.
- Reconcile revenue from donor systems to the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely data integration.
- Ensure financial data is organized, transparent, and audit-ready.
Grant & Program Accounting
- Support financial management of grants and programs, ensuring compliance and accurate reporting.
- Prepare and submit monthly AmeriCorps Program Expense Reports (PER).
- Track grant expenditures, match requirements, and funding utilization.
- Collaborate with program staff and external partners on grant budgets, cost tracking, and reporting requirements.
Systems, Documentation & Process Improvement
- Support administration of financial systems (e.g., BILL, accounting software, donor systems).
- Maintain and improve standard operating procedures and close checklists.
- Identify opportunities to streamline workflows and improve efficiency through automation.
- Contribute to strong internal controls and clear, consistent documentation.
Reporting, Governance & Team Collaboration
- Assist in preparing materials for Finance Committee and Board reporting.
- Document Finance Committee meetings and support internal finance communications.
- Participate in cross-functional collaboration with program and development teams.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful team environment grounded in shared goals.
Audit & Compliance
- Support annual audit preparation and documentation.
- Help ensure compliance with internal policies, grant requirements, and nonprofit accounting standards.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
Experience
- 3–5 years of accounting experience.
- Nonprofit accounting experience strongly preferred, including fund accounting and/or grant or project accounting.
- Experience with federal grant reporting (AmeriCorps a plus).
Skills & Competencies
- Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
- High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy and integrity.
- Ability to manage recurring processes while identifying improvements.
- Proficiency in Excel and accounting systems.
- Clear and thoughtful communicator who works well across teams.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, accountability, and follow-through
