Position Title: AZCC 2026 Fall Phoenix Urban Forestry Assistant Crew Lead – AmeriCorps

Conservation Legacy Program: Arizona Conservation Corps

Site Location: AZCC Phoenix Office
Room 23, 3146 E Wier Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85040

Terms of Service:

  • Start Date: 10/5/2026
  • End Date: 1/22/2027
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 450 hrs

Purpose:

Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC) is an AmeriCorps program that engages motivated young adults, ages 18–30, in completing challenging and impactful conservation service projects throughout the western United States. The AZCC Urban Forestry Crew program, developed in partnership with Arizona State University’s Rob and Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Service’s Urban Nature Program, is designed to address the dual challenges of environmental mitigation and underemployment in the growing field of urban forestry. Through a combination of classroom technical trainings and hands-on projects AZCC Urban Forestry crew members gain the fundamental skills needed to prepare them for careers in the expanding field of Urban Arboriculture.

Description of Duties:

Assistant Crew Leaders (ACL) are responsible for facilitating a positive crew member experience by setting an example of enthusiasm throughout work. The ACL works in tandem with the Crew Leader (CL) to communicate directions, project specifications, and constructive criticism throughout the term of service. The ACL will expand their role, learn leadership strategies, and assume management duties including filling in for the CL in project relations or completing paperwork when needed.
Most importantly, participants must be willing to contribute as active members of a team—or crew—of up to seven individuals who share an interest in arboriculture.

Program Expectations:

  • Commitment – AZCC participants must commit to all aspects of the program, including conservation projects, education, training, and other crew activities.
  • Safety – All participants are required to participate in a culture of safety on their crew during all program activities by being aware of and adhering to program policies, as well as fostering an atmosphere of wellness in the program.
  • Professionalism – Participants must be willing to follow all AZCC policies, maintain professional boundaries, and appropriately represent AZCC.
  • Teamwork – Members must be willing to engage in collaboration, respect others, and assist in making group decisions.
  • Substance Free – Participants MUST be willing and able to refrain from alcohol and drugs while participating in the AZCC program.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a United States citizen, United States national, or lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Meet HUBZone eligibility by one of the following:
    • Have lived at your home address within a HUBZone block, OR
    • Have lived within a 15-minute walk of a HUBZone block for at least 6 months and work, learn, play, shop, or worship in a HUBZone area
      • If you aren’t sure, please apply anyway—we will verify eligibility.
      • You can also check your address on the HUBZone map here.
  • Have received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or, if still in school, agree to obtain a high school diploma or equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agree to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Have the desire to learn and work in the field of urban forestry

Our Commitment:

Conservation Legacy is committed to the full inclusion of all qualified individuals and will ensure that persons with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations to perform essential functions. Some positions may require periodic overnight travel, non-traditional hours, ability to move across varied terrain, use program-specific tools and a range of technology on an infrequent or frequent basis. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Ability to safely drive an organizational vehicle may also be required for some positions. If you need assistance and/or a reasonable accommodation due to a disability during application or recruiting process, please send a request to the hiring manager.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, these positions serve Monday through Friday from 7am to 4pm, with occasional shifts to a Tuesday – Saturday schedule. Daily schedules may vary with a minimum of 1 week notice. A half-hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service.
  • This position is part of a day crew. Members return home each evening and are expected to arrive on time, ready to work at the scheduled start. Because lateness impacts the entire crew, arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving early without prior approval will result in disciplinary action.
  • Members may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
  • There is a 2 week break in the service term from December 22 - January 2. You will not have project work during those dates and you will not be paid the living stipend or additional benefit for those weeks.

Orientation and Training:

Members will receive:

  • AmeriCorps & AZCC Orientation – policies, expectations, and crew culture
  • Core Skills Training – Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace, Crew teamwork, and Worksite safety
  • Urban Arboriculture Training – urban tree canopy & heat island mitigation, Arizona native & urban tree ID, arboriculture safety, pruning & tree care principles
  • On-the-Job Learning – ongoing hands-on training in tool use & maintenance, plant ID, and applied arboriculture techniques.

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1956.35
  • Living Allowance of $480 per week.
  • Additional Benefit of $120 per week.
  • Individual Boot Stipend
  • Weekly Crew Food Stipend
  • Healthcare Coverage if Eligible
  • Childcare Coverage if Eligible
  • Loan forbearance if Eligible
  • Interest Payments if Eligible

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
