Conservation Legacy Program: Stewards Individual Placements

Site Location: Kula, HI

Terms of Service:
  • Start Date: 07/07/2026
  • AmeriCorps Slot Classification: 1700 Hours (52 Weeks)

Purpose:

Stewards Individual Placements is an AmeriCorps affiliated program that provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and protect our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting the health of natural areas.

Stewards, in partnership with the National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Advancement Program. Members will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation's historic resources. This program provides participants with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

This internship serving out of Haleakala National Park will be preserving and maintaining trails located within designated wilderness by the use of hand tools. Since Haleakala is an "on trail" park, meaning visitors are only allowed to travel into the backcountry on established trails, these trails keep park visitors from trammeling the environment of the many native species the park is home to. The use of hand tools and a team of pack mules to complete work maintains the quiet and natural character of the wilderness. Another priority is the maintenance and building of non-potable water supply structures for park visitors, animals, and staff working within the wilderness. This allows the necessary work to happen for Vegetation and Wildlife crews while they perform their stewardship activities and missions. Maintaining and restoring Haleakala's backcountry cabins is also a large portion of the work required. Maintaining these historic structures allows the public comfortable and safe access to Haleakala's beauty year-round to inspire broad appreciation and respect for the environmental efforts of the conservationists that have helped to restore this sacred environment as closely as possible to what it would have looked like naturally before western contact with the Hawaiian Islands.

Description of Duties:
  • Basic trail maintenance and sustainable construction practices using basic rock-working hand tools to build rock trail features (rock steps, water bars, causeways, riprap construction, and checks)
  • Trail work is strenuous and rather physically demanding and requires many miles of hiking at high altitudes within a typical work week. Members will also be required to move heavy rocks, use sledgehammers, chisels, rakes, and shovels.
  • Assisting Mule Packer with load in and haul out operations in backcountry. Essentially, using a team of pack mules to transport supplies for trail work, cabin maintenance, cabin resupply, native plants for out planting, distribution of traps for invasive animal control, and removal of park visitor refuse
  • Performing cabin maintenance at backcountry locations. Cleaning cabins, restocking firewood, restocking propane, packing and removal of trash, cleaning pit toilets, fixing broken windowpanes, and various other minor maintenance issues as they arise.
  • Assisting in the installation water tank liners to historic water tanks in the backcountry
  • Trail brushing, or vegetation removal along trail corridors using hand saws and loppers
