Purpose
As an AmeriCorps Program, Appalshop works to document, preserve, and amplify Appalachian voices, histories, and cultural expressions through media, education, and community engagement, with its Archive serving as a vital repository of regional memory and creative work. The program serves Appalachian communities—including artists, researchers, residents, and cultural practitioners—by ensuring long-term availability to historical and cultural materials, guided by values of preservation, authenticity, and respect for community knowledge and heritage.
As an AmeriCorps Position, the member will strengthen the sustainability of the Appalshop Archive by developing policies, cataloging workflows, and documentation systems that support long-term preservation and availability. The member will research archival best practices, identify gaps, and create tools and resources for staff and community use, while also supporting outreach and fund development efforts. This role builds organizational capacity and ensures greater public awareness, accessibility, and stewardship of Appalachian cultural history.
The AmeriCorps VISTA member will build capacity and develop sustainable solutions to alleviate poverty in underserved communities.
Description Of Duties

Time Requirements
As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed their required year of service; the member has satisfactorily completed assignments; and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets, accomplishment tracking, and quarterly reporting.

Description Of Duties
- Research prior archive policies and procedures, and compare to field-wide best practices –
- Develop cataloging workflows and standards, create a template to form and run an acquisitions committee-
- Create public access guidelines for licensing for staff to use –
- Help identify gaps in existing cataloging and documentation –
- Research past and potential archive funders, and develop a tracking system for reusable language, and prepare grant application materials-
- Research new community and national partnerships that strengthen the program with new opportunities
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- Must be 18 years of age
- High School Diploma/GED
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check

Time Requirements
- Typically, this position is expected to serve full-time (35-40 hours), but exact schedules may vary.
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive a Virtual Member Orientation (VMO) from VISTA on their first day of service.
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award* of $7,395.00
