Stewards Individual Placements
Stewards Individual Placements, a division of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural and cultural resources.  Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to build institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health.

Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE)
The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) is a bureau within the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). Established in 1977 under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA), OSMRE's primary mission is to ensure that coal mining activities are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner and that the land is restored to beneficial use following mining operations. The office provides oversight and assistance to state and tribal regulatory programs, promotes reclamation of abandoned mine lands, and supports research and training to improve reclamation techniques. OSMRE is committed to balancing the nation's need for coal as an energy source with the need to protect and restore the environment.

Position Role:
Stewards Individual Placements is seeing an OSMRE Legacy and Impact Fellow.  In 2027, Stewards Individual Placements and the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) will celebrate 25 years of partnership supporting conservation service, community capacity building, watershed restoration, abandoned mine land revitalization, heritage preservation, and public service across coalfield communities. This longstanding partnership, developed in collaboration with OSMRE and the Coal Country Watershed Team, helped shape what is now the national Stewards Individual Placements program.

The OSMRE Legacy and Impact Fellow AmeriCorps Member will support the preservation, documentation, and interpretation of this important partnership by researching program history, collecting and organizing archival materials, documenting project impacts, and developing educational and outreach resources that highlight the contributions of AmeriCorps members and partner organizations over the past 25 years. Through research, storytelling, oral history collection, and content development, the Fellow will help preserve institutional knowledge while creating resources that celebrate the lasting impact of national service in mining-impacted communities across the country.

 
Description of Duties:
To achieve the goals of this position, the Stewards’ OSMRE Legacy and Impact Fellow will complete duties in the following:

•         Historical Research and Documentation

o   Research the history and development of the OSMRE-Stewards partnership

o   Review historical reports, position descriptions, publications, photos, newsletters, grant files, and archived documents

o   Develop a comprehensive timeline documenting major milestones, projects, and program accomplishments

o   Organize digital and physical archival materials for future access and preservation

o   Document the evolution of the OSMRE program and its role in shaping the Stewards program

o   Support creation of visual materials that communicate program accomplishments and historical milestones

•         Oral History and Partner Engagement

o   Conduct interviews with former members, staff, mentors, OSMRE representatives, and partner organizations

o   Collect stories highlighting community impact, watershed restoration, reclamation efforts, and participant experiences

o   Develop written summaries and transcripts of interviews

• • Assist in preserving institutional knowledge and program history through recorded narratives
• Impact and Educational Resource Development
• • Compile quantitative and qualitative information demonstrating program outcomes and community impact
  • Develop educational materials highlighting the history of national service within OSMRE-supported communities
  • Create impact stories showcasing successful projects and partnerships
  • Assist with the development of anniversary materials, including timelines, reports, presentations, and interpretive resources
  • Help identify significant projects and accomplishments suitable for public recognition
  • Develop project summaries that describe the lasting benefits of service projects conducted through the partnership
  • Help increase public awareness of the role of AmeriCorps service in supporting reclamation, conservation, historic preservation, and community revitalization efforts

 
Qualifications:

• United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
• Be between the ages of 18-30 (or up to age 35 with Veteran status)
• Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
• Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
• Able to commit to 10 weeks of service
• Has the ability to drive, with an insurable driving history

 Time Requirements:

• Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
• Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term
• OSMRE Members are part of a cohort and meet virtually online on a bi-weekly basis; the OSMRE cohort space is established for OSMRE Members to collaborate and support one another on various projects, while also discussing various personal and professional development topics

Orientation and Training:

• Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities
• In-house training on storytelling and branding

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
