Position Title: Museum Technician/Museum Support Member 

Conservation Legacy Program: Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps

Site Location: Pipestone National Monument

Purpose:

  • The Cultural Resources Division at Pipestone National Monument is dedicated to the preservation, protection, and interpretation of the monument’s rich cultural heritage. Our mission is to steward the site’s archaeological, ethnographic, and museum resources in collaboration with affiliated Tribal Nations. We work to ensure that cultural landscapes, sacred objects, and traditional knowledge are respectfully managed and meaningfully integrated into park operations, interpretation, and decision-making.
  • There is a critical need for additional support in managing and preserving the museum collections at Pipestone National Monument, especially following a major storage facility remodel. This internship will help address long-standing gaps in collections care while incorporating updated cultural protocols developed with Tribal partners. The individual’s work will directly benefit affiliated Indigenous communities by ensuring sacred objects are preserved with respect and care. Additionally, the internship fosters intergenerational knowledge-sharing and builds capacity for future professionals in cultural resource management.

 

Description of Duties:

  • Help documenting the return process.
  • Handling and transporting of sacred items
  • Cultural protocols for sacred items
  • Lifting and transporting fragile items
  • Sensitivity when working with ceremonial items
  • Unpack and organize museum objects following the storage facility remodel
  • Re-housing of approximately 150 ceremonial pipes using culturally appropriate materials and methods
  • Updating catalogs and Museum records via computer and digitizing

 

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Pursuing a degree related in a field such as;
  • Indigenous/Native American Studies
  • Anthropology
  • Archeology
  • Museum Studies
  • Historic or Cultural Resource Management

 

Ideal candidates will have experience or coursework in museum collections care, object handling, or digital cataloging. Knowledge of Indigenous cultural protocols, is a plus. Strong attention to detail, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to work independently in a structured environment are also preferred.

Time Requirements:

  • Typically, this position is expected to serve 03/09/2026 to 10/23/2026, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service 
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
  • Orientation on affiliated Tribal Nations
  • NPS Museum Handbook guidelines/collections care
  • DOI Museum Care Standards
  • MCMS database training
  • Cultural protocols and handling practices

 

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $5,176.50
  • Living Allowance of $700.00/per week.
  • Additional Benefit of $300.00/per week.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
