Site Location: 6400 N Highway 89, Flagstaff, AZ - Flagstaff Area National Monuments NPS (Walnut Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki)

Purpose:
It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to "lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well-being." The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.
The Individual Placement (IP) will be working within the Cultural Resources Program of Flagstaff Area National Monuments. Flagstaff Area National Monuments manages three units within the National Park Service around Flagstaff, Arizona: Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, and Walnut Canyon National Monument. The Cultural Resources Program is responsible for the stewardship of archeological sites, cultural landscapes, historic structures, and ethnographic resources.
This Individual Placement (IP) will accomplish tasks that are outside the regular work of NPS staff. The IP’s research will help the NPS understand how the changing environment is affecting Wupatki Pueblo and other sites. Their studies will also help the NPS modify historic preservation techniques in accordance with the requests of associated tribes.
Description of Duties:
The IP will function as a member of the Cultural Resources team. As part of the team, they will gain experience in archeological field activities (preservation maintenance and archeological site condition assessments) as well as site record management and report writing. The IP will select a special project related to preservation maintenance, such as analyzing weather data to understand how climate change is affecting Wupatki Pueblo or testing preservation mortars.
The IP will focus on understanding how archeological sites exist within a natural and changing landscape and ecosystems.
The IP will attend preservation training and will have an opportunity to work at another NPS unit. These experiences will provide an opportunity to network with people from other work divisions and parks that perform preservation maintenance. The supervisor will hold biweekly meetings with the IP for coaching and mentoring. The IP will also have the opportunity to shadow other NPS staff to learn more about NPS careers. FLAG will also provide a resume writing and USAJobs application workshop.
1.Perform preservation maintenance at pre-contact archeological sites.
a. Essential functions and responsibilities:
i. Work as part of a crew to perform stabilization at sites within Wupatki NM and Walnut Canyon NM.
ii. Conduct archival research regarding previous stabilization of sites.
iii. Complete and track forms and photographs to document preservation work. iv. Assist with report preparation.
b. Trainings that will be provided: HPTC and/or BEST preservation training (as available), FLAG preservation maintenance training, safety training, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, report writing tutorials
2. Assist with archeological site monitoring.
a. Essential functions and responsibilities:
i. Work as part of a crew to monitor archeological sites within Wupatki NM, Sunset Crater Volcano NM, and Walnut Canyon NM. Complete paper forms, take photographs, update site location on tablets using FieldMaps ArcGIS app.
ii. Compile site documentation prior to fieldwork.
iii. Enter site records and photographs into online and MSAcess databases.
b. Trainings that will be provided: archeological site monitoring training, safety training, MSAccess, NPS CRIS (Cultural Resources Inventory System).
3. Special Project researching preservation maintenance techniques or site degradation processes. The NPS doesn't currently have staff to complete these analyses.
a. Essential functions and responsibilities:
i. The project will be identified in consultation with the IP, and will provide the IP an opportunity to collect and analyze data related to preservation maintenance or site degradation processes.
ii. Potential topics include:
1. Analysis of the performance of naturally amended mortars
2. Analysis of weather and moisture sensor data from Wupatki Pueblo.
iii. Collect data. This may include downloading weather data and/or creating sample mortars to analyze.
iv. Analyze data using basic statistics available in Excel. Analysis of data may include spatial analysis using GIS to correlate impacts with soil type, slope, visitor access, or other variables.
b. Trainings that will be provided: This will depend on exact project, but may included MSAcess, MSExcel, GIS
Qualifications:
- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
- At least 17 years of age
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
- Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Valid Driver's License
- Positive attitude
- Ability to work 10 hours in the heat and sun
- Ability to high rough uneven, tough terrain
- Willingness to work as a part of a team
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- No prior experience to Historic Preservation needed

Time Requirements:
- Typically, this position is expected to serve 11/17/2025 to 05/15/2026, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
- Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:
- Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.
- Member will receive an Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps Individual Placements Program responsibilities and requirements of the program

Evaluation and Reporting:
As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.
Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
