Dyslexia Specialist


JOB DESCRIPTION:


Works with the Coordinator to provide district wide dyslexia services with the reading intervention teachers and campus-based dyslexia teachers. Provides staff development in dyslexia and related disorders.



DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Coordinate the District’s dyslexia services.

  • Develop budget and allocation recommendations for the dyslexia program.

  • Work with the Coordinator on the selection of teachers qualified to work with students with dyslexia and related disorders.

  • Facilitate and train staff development for District and campus reading intervention teachers throughout the district in various reading and dyslexia related instruction.

  • Coordinate the provision of dyslexia and related disorders services and meet with the reading intervention teachers on a regular basis.

  • Assist the Coordinator in the coordination of District dyslexia services.

  • Act as a liaison to building personnel in interpreting education policies, procedures, and guidelines with regard to dyslexia and related disorders.

  • Work as a collaborative member of the Teaching and Learning Team.

  • Maintain current knowledge of research-based instructional strategies and materials in dyslexia and related disorders.

  • Provide leadership and coordination for the reading intervention teachers.

  • Ensure compliance standards are met regarding dyslexia and related disorders evaluations.

  • Monitor District and campus reading intervention staff to insure smooth and efficient communication with campuses and other central office staff.

  • Analyze outcomes and evaluate instructional programs to recommend appropriate changes in materials and implementation.

  • Attend curriculum meetings as assigned.

  • Assist with management of electronic storage of dyslexia and related disorders data.

  • Consult positively and effectively with principals, teachers, assistant principals, team leaders, department chairs, and parents.

  • Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution.

  • Communicate District instructional goals and objectives of the assigned area to administrators, staff, and community as appropriate.

  • Provide effective professional development activities by using district goals, program evaluations, and teacher and administrator input.

  • Implement the policies established by Federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and Board policy as pertains to the assigned discipline area.

  • Define and recommend the instructional program’s fiscal needs in the budget development process.

  • Demonstrate responsible fiscal control over assigned program budgets.

  • Keep informed of research, disseminate ideas to other professionals, identify trends and opportunities and apply this information as appropriate.

  • Demonstrate steps taken for professional growth.

  • Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards.

  • Maintain memberships and active participation in professional organizations.

  • Perform general administrative duties.

  • Have regular attendance.

  • Maintain confidentiality.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


EXPERIENCE:


  • Three years of successful dyslexia teaching experience

  • Experience in working with students with dyslexia and related disorders

  • Experience in staff development presentations

  • One-year successful campus leadership experience

  • Experience in curriculum development, implementation and evaluation


QUALIFICATIONS:


Education/Certification:

  • Master’s degree in related field
  • Valid Texas teaching certification, Grades EC-6, with Reading specialization or course work
  • Training/certification in a structured and systematic Dyslexia intervention program
  • Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong background in literacy instruction and assessment in Kindergarten – Sixth Grade
  • Working knowledge of curriculum, instruction, staff development, and special education processes
  • Strong knowledge and practice of current research-based balanced literacy models and interventions for struggling readers and writers
  • Working knowledge of dyslexia and related disorders as well as Section 504 requirements
  • Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
