Position Summary
The Mainline Underground Utilities Supervisor is responsible for overseeing field crews performing installation, maintenance, and repair of underground utility systems such as water, sewer, and telecommunications. This role ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications, regulatory requirements, and company standards.
Key ResponsibilitiesField Supervision & Crew Leadership
- Lead and supervise daily activities of underground utility crews, subcontractors, and equipment operators.
- Plan, schedule, and assign tasks to ensure project deadlines and productivity goals are met.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce all safety protocols, including excavation and trench safety.
Technical Oversight
- Interpret and apply engineering drawings, utility plans, and specifications to field activities.
- Ensure proper installation of underground utilities, including trenching, shoring, pipe laying, conduit installation, backfilling, and compaction.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe jobsite at all times by identifying hazards and enforcing OSHA, DOT, and local safety regulations.
- Oversee proper use of PPE, trench boxes, sloping/shoring methods, and confined space procedures.
- Coordinate and ensure utility locates are completed prior to excavation and that conflicts are resolved promptly.
Coordination & Communication
- Communicate daily with project managers, inspectors, engineers, and utility companies.
- Prepare and submit daily logs, timesheets, as-built information, material usage reports, and production updates.
- Coordinate delivery of materials, equipment, and subcontractor activities to maintain workflow.
Quality Assurance & Problem-Solving
- Inspect work continuously to confirm compliance with plans, code requirements, and quality standards.
- Troubleshoot field challenges such as unexpected utilities, soil conditions, groundwater, and design conflicts.
- Recommend adjustments to improve productivity, safety, and construction quality.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; trade school or technical training preferred.
- 5-10 years of underground utility construction experience, including at least 3-7 years leading crews.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and utility drawings.
- Knowledge of trench safety, excavation practices, and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to operate or direct operation of heavy equipment (Directional Drill, Missle, Plow, excavators, loaders, trenchers).
- Strong problem-solving, planning, and time-management abilities.
- Familiarity with digital reporting tools and project management apps preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, walk uneven terrain, and enter trenches or confined spaces when required.
- Regular exposure to construction noise, heavy equipment, and traffic.
Work Conditions
- Full-time, field-based role.
- Overtime, weekends, and travel between job sites may be required depending on project schedule.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
