About the Role
A dynamic, student-centered public charter school in Northwest Washington, D.C. is seeking an experienced and collaborative Middle School Special Education (SPED) Coordinator to lead and oversee special education services for the 2026–2027 school year.
This full-time, hybrid position includes on-campus leadership responsibilities combined with remote planning, compliance, and administrative work. The SPED Coordinator plays a vital role in ensuring students with disabilities receive high-quality, legally compliant, and individualized educational services that support academic achievement and social-emotional growth.
This is an excellent opportunity for a special education professional with strong leadership skills and a deep understanding of IDEA, IEP development, and inclusive educational practices. Previous experience working in Special Education is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and coordinate all middle school special education services and programming
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, District of Columbia regulations, and school policies
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Schedule, facilitate, and participate in IEP, eligibility, reevaluation, and multidisciplinary team meetings
- Support and coach special education teachers, related service providers, and general education staff on best practices and compliance
- Monitor student progress and ensure appropriate accommodations, modifications, and specialized instruction are implemented with fidelity
- Collaborate with administrators, teachers, school psychologists, counselors, and families to develop individualized student support plans
- Analyze student achievement and compliance data to inform instructional decisions and program improvement
- Coordinate evaluations, referrals, and eligibility processes for students requiring special education services
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure timely completion of all compliance requirements
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding special education services and procedural safeguards
- Promote inclusive instructional practices and support co-teaching and collaborative service delivery models
- Participate in professional development and contribute positively to the school's leadership team
QualificationsEducation
- Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related education field required
- Valid Special Education teaching certification/licensure (or eligibility for licensure in the District of Columbia)
Experience
- Minimum of two years of previous Special Education teaching experience required
- Previous experience coordinating or leading Special Education programs strongly preferred
- Experience working with middle school students preferred
- Demonstrated experience developing, implementing, and monitoring IEPs
- Strong knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and special education compliance requirements
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and families
