Responsibilities
The Camp Ranger’s specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Protection and control of property and people
- Supervise all use of the property. Patrol the property as necessary for trespass, vandalism, and fire.
- Ensure a safe and healthy camp environment and know emergency procedures, adhering to the Guide to Safe Scouting and the National Camp Accreditation Standards.
- Comply with established Council business and accounting procedures, including petty cash and other funds, and submit reconciliation reports monthly.
- Submit regular reports and maintain essential business records.
- Supervise maintenance contractors and camp vendors as assigned.
- Ensure all facilities are properly cleaned and prepared for campers upon arrival, addressing any needs as they arise.
- Have a working operational knowledge of camp maintenance equipment, including tractors and mowers, and ensure that all equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Be particularly alert to conditions that affect health, safety, sanitation, and good housekeeping practices.
- Aid in the establishment and following of work schedules for routine maintenance and operational procedures. Order necessary supplies when required and approved.
- Cooperate closely with the Camp Director, Council office staff, Camp masters, Camping and Properties Committee to effectively resolve questions of facility operation, especially when checking groups in and out, issuing equipment, submitting records, and reports of each occupancy and related matters.
- Attend Properties Committee meetings
- Make regular inspections to determine essential repairs and corrective actions required.
- Submit estimates of time and materials when necessary and perform general repairs as authorized.
- Maintain a record of all maintenance performed.
- Maintain the approved property conservation plan.
- Maintain harmonious relationships with local officials and government services, adjoining landowners, and neighboring communities.
- Develop and grow relationships with local contractors and suppliers to best represent the Council.
- Develop a strong relationship with the members of the Camping and Properties Committees, with a focus on growth and expansion to support the camp.
- Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external stakeholders who utilize the property.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices surrounding the Ranger’s residence and throughout the camp property.
- Maintain a harmonious relationship with the Camp Director and other seasonal camp staff.
- Assist with Council programs and activities, especially when they occur at Camp.
- Be able to communicate effectively while enforcing the established council policy and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned
- This position works with volunteers performing camping, programmatic, and administrative tasks.
- Must maintain positive relationships with current camp volunteers and cultivate and recruit additional volunteers.
- Ability to perform basic maintenance skills, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and carpentry, with specialized capability in at least one technical skill.
- Experience using hand tools, power equipment, and machinery.
- Ability to use a computer and experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- High School diploma with a college degree preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years old with prior maintenance or camp staff experience
- Must submit to a criminal background check, including motor vehicle driving record history. Maintain a current Ohio driver’s license and be insurable on the Council’s insurance policy.
- Must be Willing to accept a flexible work schedule that includes weekends and some holidays.
- Live by the basic tenets embodied in the Scout Oath and Law and become a member of Scouting America.
- Ability to work without direct supervision to accomplish routine tasks and maintenance.
- Ability to relate well with people and to have a friendly and helpful attitude and appearance with Scouting families and the public.
- Ability to enforce established council policies and procedures.
- Ability for heavy lifting up to 150 lbs.
- Understanding that the working conditions are outside for much of the day, you will be exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
The following training courses are required to be completed within the first year of employment:
- Scouting America’s Camp Ranger Basic from Scouting U
- Current American Red Cross Standard First Aid, Emergency Care and Safety Institute First Aid, or equivalent;
- Current American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers (or equivalent)
