Job Title: B’nei Mitzvah Tutor
Department: Clergy
FLSA Status: $60 Per Half Hour (30 Minute Sessions)
Schedule: Weekday evenings (5:00 – 7:00 PM) or Sundays (12:00 – 2:00 PM); hours may vary slightly
Reports to: Senior Cantor
About Us
Temple Emanu-El, a vibrant Reform synagogue located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, is seeking enthusiastic and experienced B’nei Mitzvah Tutors to join our dedicated educational team. Tutors will work closely with students to prepare them for their B’nei Mitzvah ceremonies by teaching liturgical prayers, Torah portion, and Haftarah portion, ensuring they are confident and prepared to lead from the bimah on the Shabbat morning of their B’nei Mitzvah.
Core Responsibilities:
Provide individualized instruction in Torah and Haftarah chanting using the Lithuanian Binder trope
Teach Hebrew reading and prayer skills in alignment with Temple Emanu-El’s curriculum
Support students in building confidence, fluency, and a sense of ownership over their B’nei Mitzvah preparation
Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment that celebrates each student’s unique journey
Qualifications:
Proficient in Lithuanian Binder trope and Hebrew reading
Experience teaching in Jewish educational settings
Passionate about Jewish learning and ritual practice
Reliable, self-motivated, and an effective communicator
Warm, engaging, and able to build rapport with students and families
Available a minimum of two days per week: Sundays (12:00–2:00 PM) or weekdays (4:00–7:00 PM) from September 8 through May 28
Authorized to work in the U.S. without visa sponsorship
