Summary
We are seeking an Assistant Director of Security who reports directly to the Senior Director of Security & Logistics and serves as the second-in-command for all security matters. The ideal candidate must have experience in law enforcement and/or the armed services, along with a proven record of protecting large, complex organizations. This role includes assisting with oversight and leadership at the Community House, the 66th Street School Building, 3 East Townhouse, and the cemeteries. The Assistant Director will oversee staffing, support training and education efforts, and work closely with the Senior Director to develop and implement policies and procedures that ensure a secure and welcoming environment for Temple Emanu-El’s members, staff, and visitors.
As a key member of the operations team, the Assistant Director of Security will provide both administrative and hands-on leadership, ensuring strong visibility and familiarity among the community, temple members, and New York City organizational partners. In the absence of the Senior Director of Security & Logistics, this individual will serve as the primary liaison with public law enforcement and other citywide security agencies.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Security Staffing
Report directly to the Senior Director of Security & Logistics, you will work collaboratively with the Assistant Director of Security to manage all internal and external functions for the temple. Temple functions include Shabbat worship and programming, Streicker Center events, High Holy Days, and all other regular temple programs
Work with a contractual security partner to ensure effective and efficient security staffing for all programs and events
Review guards and officers before hire/placement and final interview by Senior Director of Security & Logistics to ensure fit with temple culture and appropriate skillset; provides on-the-job training as necessary
Provide backfill support to maintain coverage for officer schedules
Periodically review the contractual security staffing relationship
Oversee and review weekly scheduling and billing
Security Infrastructure
Ensure video, access control, alarm, and other security systems are maintained in good working order and report any defects and/or deficiencies to the Senior Director of Security & Logistics
Security Training and Education
Provide training and education to contracted security personnel, ensuring all licenses are current and active
Provide coaching, performance management, and professional development for team members
Ensure consistent execution of security protocols and standards
Attend outside trainings and briefings
Supervisory Responsibilities
Contracted security officers
NYPD paid detail
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree preferred
A minimum of 10 years of experience in security management is required
Prior work experience in law enforcement or the armed services is required
Required New York State security guard license (NYSDOS)
Required New York State armed guard license (NYSDOS) with unrestricted license to carry a firearm
Security certifications, such as CPP, PSP, preferred
Multilingual capabilities preferred
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
