What are the responsibilities and job description for the Principal Engineer position at Confidential?
Principal Electronic & Software Engineer, $120-$160k
Build the Systems That Define What Comes Next
Great products don't happen by accident. They happen because someone owns the vision, rolls up their sleeves, and sees it through from a blank whiteboard to a finished product rolling off the line. If that's the kind of engineer you are, we want to talk to you.
We're looking for a Principal Electronic & Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and support of advanced embedded electronic systems. This is a hands-on technical leadership role where your fingerprints will be on every layer of the product, from hardware and firmware to the software that keeps production humming. You'll shape architecture, solve tough problems, and mentor the next wave of engineers, all within a collaborative team that values real engineering skill.
Why You'll Want This Role
- Real ownership. You'll drive projects from concept to production, not just one slice of the process.
- Genuine impact. Your decisions on architecture, design, and testing will directly shape product quality and performance.
- Room to grow. Lead cross-functional teams, mentor rising engineers, and expand your technical influence across the organization.
- A hands-on culture. We're an engineering-first team that respects deep technical work and gets things done together.
Compensation & Benefits
We reward experience and results. Here's what you can expect:
- Salary: $120,000 – $160,000 per year, based on your experience and expertise
- 401(k) with company matching
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Health savings account (HSA)
- Life insurance
- Generous paid time off
What You'll Do
- Lead the design and development of embedded electronic systems, including hardware, firmware, and supporting software applications
- Define system architecture, technical specifications, and product requirements
- Design analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits with a focus on reliability, manufacturability, and performance
- Develop embedded firmware for microcontroller-based systems using C/C
- Build and maintain software applications for testing, calibration, diagnostics, and production support
- Create PCB schematics and layouts using Altium, KiCad, or similar tools
- Perform system bring-up, debugging, validation, and troubleshooting across hardware and firmware platforms
- Develop production test strategies, validation systems, and test fixtures
- Support manufacturing, assembly, quality assurance, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Lead design reviews and ensure products meet performance, quality, and reliability standards
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership across cross-functional teams
- Partner closely with engineering, manufacturing, operations, and quality teams throughout the product lifecycle
What You Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field (Master's preferred)
- 10–15 years of experience in embedded systems and electronic product development
- Strong expertise in embedded firmware development using C/C
- Extensive experience with analog and digital circuit design and PCB development
- Hands-on experience with hardware debugging, system integration, and troubleshooting
- Familiarity with manufacturing environments, production test systems, and product support
- Excellent analytical, communication, leadership, and mentoring skills
Nice to have:
- Experience with Python, C#, .NET, or similar programming tools
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems, Lean Manufacturing, and Six Sigma methodologies
Where You'll Work
This is an in-person role that spans both engineering and manufacturing environments. You'll work shoulto-shoulder with talented colleagues across departments, split your time between hands-on technical work and production support, and stay closely involved in product development and continuous improvement. If you thrive when you're close to the work and the people building alongside you, you'll feel right at home here.
Ready to Lead?
If you're an experienced engineer who wants real ownership, meaningful impact, and a team that appreciates great engineering, we'd love to hear from you. Apply today and help us build what comes next.
