Electrical Designer / Drafter
Job Summary:
The Electrical Designer / Drafter is responsible for developing detailed electrical drawings, schematics, layouts, and supporting documentation for industrial projects. This role works closely with engineering, project management, fabrication, and field teams to create accurate construction-ready drawings, perform basic electrical design calculations, and ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes and industry standards. The position plays a critical role in supporting successful project execution from design through installation and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities:
• Create and revise detailed electrical drawings, schematics, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, panel schedules, wiring diagrams, and installation details.
• Develop electrical layouts for power distribution, lighting, grounding, control systems, and low-voltage systems.
• Interpret engineering sketches, specifications, markups, and design concepts into complete construction-ready documentation.
• Coordinate with electrical engineers, project managers, mechanical designers, panel shop personnel, and field installation teams.
• Assist with electrical equipment selection and overall system layout development.
• Perform basic electrical calculations including load calculations, voltage drop analysis, conduit fill calculations, and panel sizing.
• Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards including NEC, NFPA requirements, local regulations, and internal design standards.
• Review drawings and documentation for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and quality.
• Maintain document control, revision tracking, and drawing updates throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support field installation and commissioning activities by responding to RFIs and updating as-built drawings.
• Coordinate with the in-house panel fabrication team to support manufacturing and assembly activities.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:
• Associate degree, technical diploma, or certification in Electrical Drafting, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in electrical design and drafting.
• Experience supporting industrial, manufacturing, process, or heavy industrial projects preferred.
• Experience developing electrical drawings using AutoCAD or similar CAD platforms.
• Familiarity with electrical distribution systems, control systems, and industrial electrical installations.
Special Requirements:
• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards.
• Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, and design documentation.
• Ability to travel occasionally within the regional operating area to support project meetings, site visits, and field activities as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and related drafting software.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Understanding of electrical design principles, drafting standards, and industrial electrical systems.
• Ability to perform basic electrical calculations and apply engineering standards.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate documentation.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Desired Characteristics:
• Experience with industrial combustion systems.
• Exposure to electrical furnaces, kilns, or thermal processing equipment.
• Familiarity with PLCs, instrumentation, and industrial control systems.
• Experience supporting manufacturing, metals, ceramics, glass, or heat-processing industries.
• Knowledge of panel fabrication and assembly processes.
Work Environment:
• Primarily office-based with periodic visits to manufacturing facilities, fabrication shops, and industrial project sites throughout the region.
• Work may involve exposure to industrial environments including manufacturing and construction settings.
• Occasional travel may be required to support project execution, field verification, commissioning, and customer meetings.
• Standard business hours with flexibility as needed to support project schedules and deadlines.
