Company Controller
About the Role
A leading engineering and construction group is seeking an experienced Controller to become an integral part of our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company, including closing the books and preparing timely financial statements, as well as communicating with insurance brokers, independent auditors, and banking partners.
This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and will manage a team of finance professionals.
This is an in-office position based in the greater Richmond, VA area.
Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate financial statements, reports, and forecasts in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Oversee payroll, check runs, credit card reconciliations, and vendor payments.
- Develop and manage the annual budget and financial forecasts, ensuring alignment with company goals.
- Supervise the accounting team, ensuring accurate recording of financial transactions and adherence to accounting principles.
- Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure the integrity of financial data.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations and standards, including tax regulations and audits.
- Oversee cash flow management, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and treasury systems.
- Conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making by identifying trends and variances.
- Identify financial risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
- Mentor and train accounting staff, fostering professional development and team effectiveness.
- Communicate financial information to stakeholders, including company partners, internal departments, and external parties.
- Support independent accountants in the preparation and audit of annual consolidated financial statements.
- Assist in the implementation of a new ERP system.
- Perform additional duties as requested by the senior leadership team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or Accounting from an accredited university.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Controller.
- Proven experience managing a team.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Google Suite, and ERP systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to travel as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a Controller in a multi-division company.
- Expertise in Sage products
